Hello, I'm new to this forum and have a few questions about my work history and companies that would be willing to hire me. I have a pretty spotty work history to say the least, I'm 32, been on disability for most of my life, and have had very few jobs. The jobs that I've had only lasted a few months each, most of them at the start of this last decade, the gaps in my work history are 4 to 5 years between jobs. Now there is nothing physically wrong with me, I have OCD/ADHD/ADD etc, I don't take any medication I don't need it. I have all the paper work to get my permit with all the endorsements for the CDL.
Now my question is, besides Swift, and England, which told me they pretty much have no issues with my work back ground, I have no criminal record of any kind, one speeding ticket back in 2002, had one fender bender with my sisters car in a privet driveway earlier this year, but not out on the highway and no police showed up. Other then that, that's pretty much it, So what other companies are like Swift and England, That have a training school and don't care that much about work history? I did a lot of farm work, but I never drove a truck that needed a CDL. I'm perfectly willing to learn, work and my goal is to get off disability all together. I'm preparing at some point in the next month or two to contact swift again and follow though with them. I understand that I have to start from the bottom and work my way up, that's not a problem for me, I'm willing. Does anyone have any insight that they could offer me? Hopefully the swift recruiter wasn't pulling my leg about the work history stuff just to get me interested and tell me No later on. Thank you for the help

No company cares about your work history or lack thereof. They only care about being able to verify whatever you tell them.

You may need to find a job that you can work at for the next 3 to 10 years before going for any CDL training. This way you will cut down on a lot of explaining if you have the work history behind you.
YOU CAN DO IT!
Good luck to you!!Chinatown Thanks this. -
Does'nt Walmart require experience?I think as a potential driver he's not going to have trouble finding a job.Todays trucking companies are more interested in what the MVR and csa looks like rather then the job history because look how many companies right now are scrounging for drivers because their insurance is turning away more drivers then companies wanna hire.Anymore they'll take what they can get.

My friend took two years off from working when his mom died and he got a little inheritance. Why? Because life is freaking short and he wanted too. He then went to school and got his CDL. He got offers from just about everybody he applied too and went with Schneider and is still working there. Schneider does not have it's own school though. You will find that companies that pay for your training might be a little more picky then if you go and get your cdl yourself. But the bottom line is that work gaps will not prevent you from becoming a truck driver.
And always remember if one company turns you down, there are a pile more that won't. Like ZZ Top says, "I got a gal that lives on the hill, if she won't do it then her sister will." A great philosophy for life. -
Steps to becoming a truck driver:
(1) Go work at McDonalds for 10 years so you have a perfect work history
(2) Go get your cdl
(3) Go out with a trainer for 3 to 8 weeks
(4) Then you are a truck driver
What a joke lol -
