Hello everyone.... I am an interpreter with the US forces in Afghanistan for the last almost six years.... I am about to get my visa to US in the next couple of months.
I have been searching online about what career to pursue but to be honest I like to become a trucker. I want to explore the USA and almost be my own boss...... I would like to know if I would be able to do it....... I have never driven a truck yet.... Also suggest me a state to go to where I can get my CDL quick and get a job right after......... Any other info would be appreciated....... Thanks
wannabe from Afghanistan,

If you know of anybody here that trucks ride with them for a week or so just so you know what your getting into
shir1 Thanks this. -
Iwould also recommend you go to a outside private driving school and not one of these carriers schools The reason I say that is that way you got flexibility down the road and not be tied to a company to the point where they know they got you and they can hang you over the coals so to speak
blairandgretchen and shir1 Thank this. -
Texas would be an excellent choice. No state income tax, you have friends there, and there are plenty of trucking jobs.
If you want to see the country and don't mind being on the road for weeks at a time, then choose to driver OTR (Over The Road) for your first couple of years. This is a huge country and every corner of it has something beautiful. Each region seems to have its own "flavor" of accent and way of living. After a couple of years OTR you might find another place that pulls to your heart, where you would want to buy a house and settle down.
Thanks again, and blessings. -
And thank you as well OP for your service and sacrifice. Good luck to you on your new life, and welcome to your new home!shir1 Thanks this. -

Thanks everyone... I am 24 years old and i am married with two kids. My plan is that I am coming to US alone at first and work hard there for couple of years and then would want to bring my family to the states. I would even move to any state for that matter. so i would not mind being on the road for weeks or months since I would not have any family or home anyway.
The only thing I am worried about is that everyone talk about how it is very hard to be with a trainer in the beginning.
By the way I have not got my visa yet but expecting it in the next couple of months. hopefully........... If you guys feel we did our part for your troops, then it is time for your government to show us what they can do for us. Please contact your politicians if you can to work on the SIV(special immigrant visa). You would not believe what the interpreters are going through as a result of employment with the coalition forces... Countless of my fellow interpreters have been beheaded so far and counting.. Sorry for a long post..........Thank you everyone.
