Please help me find a path to reach my goals. Any advice is needed, and welcome!

    Hello everyone, it has been a while since I last posted. This past April I started at Tyson Foods, and have since left following what appeared to be greener pastures, aka a management job outside of the trucking industry.

    So I want to start this thread stating what my goal is, and always has been, in hopes of receiving as much advice and thoughts as possible.

    My eventual goal is to fly helicopters, I started out in the military trying to attend flight school, but was not able to due to a medical issue that is resolved as far as civilian flying is concerned. So, with this being my goal I need to save up about $80,000 for schooling and living expenses to attend the school I have chosen.

    The current situation I am in is as follows:

    $18,000 in debt (which I would want to pay off as quickly as possible prior to trying to save any money)

    In my current job I make $18/hour for 40 hours per week.

    I need $65,000 for the flight school.

    And I am figuring $15,000 for living expenses while in the school (6 months)

    I am single, and if I were to go back to trucking I could do so with no need for an apartment, thus eliminating rent and utilities.

    At this time I would like to team drive with a great friend of mine whom I have known for 15 years.

    Our experience level should be considered at the 0 years mark, even though I do have some experience my friend does not.

    Right now we are considering US Express as well as Tyson Foods for teaming. We are looking for the obvious I suppose, highest mile per week potential, highest pay per mile, and a company that at least treats you somewhat decent haha. Both of us are willing to work hard, but I would prefer to get on with a company that I can stay with the whole time I am working towards my goal. However, I have looked at Quest transport as an option after gaining a little experience because of their runs and CPM.

    So, can anyone recommend or comment on the companies I have mentioned for teaming with a friend? Also, can anyone offer suggestions for reaching my goal in the shortest time possible?

    Sorry for the long post, I just wanted to put everything out there. It has become very frustrating for me at this point because I have had this dream for so long, but it always feels very unrealistic to me to save that amount of money. Also, I do understand some of the pitfalls of teaming, but I should mention that I have no problems sleeping in a moving truck and I highly prefer teaming over solo.

    Good plan!! You know, so many people aim personal goals low and hit them, and that is the problem. We should set out goals high and continue to strive to reach them. ........

    I'm still researching things:but

    US Xpress--You might wanna consider that your trainers truck and your team truck will likely be an automatic tranny at this time ...Not a good way to start new IMHO..What happens if in 1-2 yrs you find some high paying gig for a team .. Except This company all they have is Eaton 10spds.. Re-train ?


    Now if you learn and train on a 10 speed for example for a yr or so then find some other gig and all they happen to have is auto's I don't think it will be much of an issue..

    Just Food for thought: it is the reason My wife and I will likely go with Con-way..

    Mostly Standard Transmissions so far but that is also changing

    About same pay

    Can bank days off

    have inverters in the trucks

    allow a small dog..

    my understanding also as long as you don't go out of route excessively like more than 10% they don't mess with ya..

    Probably make more money teaming with Old Dominion, but USX is a good choice also.
    Hazmat/tanker companies would be even better.

    I'd go back to Tysons. You have to run the Extra board for awhile at OD before you can bid on a partner. Tysons would let you run Ar-Ca every week probably. Figure same run, know when you'd be home, moderate winter except Jan-Feb, plenty of miles and you know the rules already. They have good equipment so what's the catch? Fly on the days off to build time.

    ODFL - run like snot and split north of $200k gross/year.

    That's on 6000 miles a week/ 68cpm.

    Your 15 year experience buddy will be in with a clean record, you'll need some experience. Worth checking out either way.

    I'm no expert, but from my research. The helicopter field is saturated with noob pilots in debt, without a huge amount of jobs to take. Just saying. They say there is a demand, but that's for experienced pilots.

    and by they I mean... Them.

    Can I ask what you plan to do with your rotary ticket? There are so many pilots coming out of the military with tens of thousands of hours in some cases. Power line, logging, medevac, news, police, vip shuttle are all going to be snatched up by them long before someone out of flight school gets them. Best of luck just don't want you to be blindsided.

    That goes for all civilian aviation jobs. You can't beat the experience you get in the military, you get more hours than you would in any civilian flight school.
