I'm with one of those mega carriers, in good standing with dispatch and all that so far.

Something has come up at home that I can't pass up. I'm supposed to be taking a few days off at one of our terminals pretty soon, so I won't be leaving the truck/trailer anywhere I shouldn't. I might have to stretch the time off a bit, which means I won't be available to generate revenue for them for an extra day or two.

Am I being paranoid here thinking I'm going to get canned for taking an extra day or two off? I mean if things go well at home it won't really matter, but there's a chance I'll still need a job.

They are probably going to boil you in oil. This happens a lot. Come back to work as soon as humanely possible.

It's possible they might vote the guillotine...

Seriously, the company might make a small fuss cause ya told them only X amount of days.
Won't be a BIG deal unless ya make it a habit..

Okay, so it's just my neurosis kicking in again.

I'm really just going to join the looting in Ferguson. All that black Friday inventory just sitting there waiting to be taken....

If they fire me, do I still owe them for training me? That could work out pretty well...

Make sure you let them know first. No-showing/no-calling on your day due back is a fireable offense with Con-Way Truckload.

Exactly, no matter who you work for, big company or small company, don't be the guy that just doesn't show up for work and doesn't say a thing. Call them, let them know some stuff has come up at home and that you will need to stay home for an extra day or so. **** happens, but do your part and don't leave your dispatcher sitting there wondering why you aren't showing up for work when he has a load for you and expects you to be ready to roll.

if you communicate, they won't fire you. Communication is essential in this business. I would expect them to assign your truck to someone else though. You should make sure that you take all your stuff with you when you go home and just go ahead and assume that you will be in a different truck when you return.

When your off just sing the Willie nelson song in your head 'On the road again, just cant wait to get on the road again'. They need you back rollin after your whole 2 days off.
