    I have a CDL class B license since 1983.
I went to school to get my class A CDL. In order to get the class A permit and to keep my class B license I had to get a medical waiver from my home state (CT).
As per FMCSA before I can apply for a federal waiver I have to keep the state issued waiver for 3 years.
With this waiver I cannot cross state lines for the next 3 years witch is an issue in its self but dealing with it.

I will be moving in about 3 or 4 months to NC. I am now being told by 2 people in school, 1 an office worker and the other I don’t know if I can trust that I have to stay in my state for 1 year before I can transfer my CDL without needing to retake the CDL test all over again is this true?
This I am told the day after I passed my state test so now have a class A driver license once I go to DMV for the picture part.
Someone said I can have a residents address in my old state and use that for 1 year but I could not have a CDL driving job in the new state (NC) because I cannot cross state lines of my old state (CT) based on the medical waiver.
The school knew I was moving and about needing to get the waiver but did not know the limits of the waiver before I signed up but thinking now they told me what I wanted to hear to get my money!

So if I move within the next year do I need to retake the CDL test and if so how much of it as I have the class B w/air brakes for 30 years, would it be just the class A part and all the endorsements that I took when I got it or everything?

I just started looking thru the FMCSA green book for an answer and if you have an answer for me where is the proof is it in the green book or state level and can you post a link so I can see it.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Why not call the NCDOT and ask them instead of relying on someone from a FORUM to answer your question.
    Directly from NCDOT website:
For DMV related questions, you may call 919.715.7000 during normal business hours.
For all other DOT related questions, please call 1.877.368.4968 (DOT-4YOU) during normal business hours.

Did try but they were gone for the day. Was hopping to get "good" information so I can sleep better that I have the last few nights before taking my test the other day is all.

BTW the number the wife was told to call is 919-861-3319 CDL Licensing think this was after calling the DOT-4YOU number.
Will give it a try tomorrow and then maybe legal action when I find out the answer.
I am still looking over the green book.

    Thanks

How long has it been between moves? Did they start to MA then to NJ now back to MA?

I wished the school knew what they are doing before I signed up then I could have decided what to do.

As far as I know, Massachusetts is the only state that does this:
Doesn't matter how long that you have had your CDL (and that means 10,20,30 years or more), if you haven't driven for at least 2 years commercially, you cannot transfer an out of state CDL to Mass. No exceptions. Even if you were driving OTR and were driving in Massachusetts prior.
And Mass. aggressively checks all employment and tax records when you do try an out of state conversion.
You will have to do ALL tests (written and road tests all over again).
And Mass. requires both blind side and sight side alley dock (into a tiny box).
If you so much as tap an orange cone, instant auto fail.

I have a relative who has held a FL cdl for 10 years and wants to transfer it to Ma. He hasn't worked for the last 2 years consistently. MA is requiring him to do all tests in order to transfer.

I did my test in Ma just over a year ago. They don't make it easy. Pretty much everything the previous poster said is true except we don't have to do a blind side alley dock just site side. I did have to do both blind and site side parallel

Back to your original question. The only accurate answer you will get will be from the NC DOT. (Unless someone who posts here has recently made the conversion. Doesn't really matter what state you are coming from it all depends on the state you are transferring to

Hi FuzzFace, this topic comes up time and time again, and get's a variety of responses, mostly hearsay. Call the DOT in the state you plan to go, and get the straight poop. Personally, I was going to move to Cal. to be closer to my kids, and the Cal. DOT said I had to surrender my Wis. CDL, which I've been grandfathered for years, and start all over. Same with Wisconsin, I believe.

Call the NC drivers license people and ask them. I moved twice and both times I had to do the whole hazmat thing over. Tests, fingerprinting, background check and $$$. Every thing else transfered. Was told that federal law prohibits the transfer of hazmat between states.

First I want to thank all that have helped.
Ok here is the scoop I got from NC at 919-861-3319 CDL Licensing Div.

You bring your good CDL license, proof where you live, up to date medical card and proof of car insurance otherwise they put a restriction on your lic.
The restriction you can only drive a Co. truck, no private cars or you would need to get your license insured to drive private cars.
Have a brother that had his lic. Insured so he could drive any car when he did not have a car in his name insured, he is a body man and had use of any car on the lot to use with dealer plate.

I was told the only testing is a sight & sign shape test no matter how long you had your license.
If your HAZMAT is not up to date and want to keep it you will need to do everything – back ground/finger prints and the HAZMET test like in any state like new or re-new HM endorsement.

At this time there is a $30 paper work fee, $75 CDL fee, and $15 for each endorsement.
If you have motorcycle endorsement that is another $15 endorsement fee.

If you need a medical waiver like I have now and may still need down there you have to talk to NC DMV medical Div. on what is needed. I did not talk to them at this time but if like here in CT it was get the forums filled out by doctor and turn in to NC DMV.

I think that is everything but as has been pointed out it is best to call the state you want to move to and get it straight from them.
