I am a new truck driver applied for a TWIC card and during the process at the office they asked if I planned to be a Merchant Mariner in the future (something to that extent).
Did not really understand whatMerchant Mariner was at the time (I guess if you work on ships?), but I said "No". Should I have said yes? Would it have been an additional credential?

    Chinatown Thanks this.

You're fine. If you don't plan on being a merchant marine then you answered correctly. I don't know why they would even ask you that. I wasn't asked that when I got my TWIC.

If you are already a merchant marine the approval process is streamlined. Has nothing to do with if you plan on being one in the future.

That must be a new question. I wasn't asked either.I have the (OS) Ordinary Seaman's document, but got it before TWIC was started.

It is relatively new. Like I stated just a way to try and speed up the process (it's taking up to 6 weeks for TWIC approval now)

I just got mine maybe 2-3 weeks ago and they asked that question. On the six week thing...if you did the pre-registration online (plug in all of your personal information ahead of your appointment or walk in)...it speeds up the process. I had my TWIC in the mail in about two weeks.

I just set up an appointment and did the pre-enrollment online. My appointment could be tomorrow but I will go Friday instead. They do now ask the question about the Merchant Marine now to everybody it appears. Here is more information from the site on the time to get it completed. http://www.tsa.gov/stakeholders/transportation-worker-identification-credential-twic®
TWIC Processing Delays: TSA is aware that some transportation workers are experiencing delays obtaining their TWIC card. TSA recently conducted a major system upgrade, which resulted in some application processing delays. TSA is committed to working diligently to ensure that delays are minimized and that efficient processing of applications and card production is achieved. Applicants should expect TWIC application processing to take approximately 3 weeks, however, applications that require review by a TSA adjudicator may experience an additional 3 to 5 weeks for processing. Applicants are encouraged to enroll at least 6-8 weeks in advance of when your TWIC card is required. If you are experiencing a longer than usual processing time, you may continue to check your application status online here or via the UES Call Center at [IMG]1-855-DHS-UES1 ([IMG]855-347-8371).

    Wow, that was fast!

I went to to TWIC office on 12/8/14 and received my TWIC card in the mail on 12/12/14
Just waiting for the "care card" now which has the PIN I take it.
Do I need to memorize the PIN or just keep it with the TWIC card?

    bubbagumpshrimp Thanks this.

Same here. Did the on line part about a week later I did a walk in, they told me appt. go first but took me right a way. They did ask me that question and all the one on the on line forum just to make sure I filled it out right.
Little more than a week I got the card and a few days later the PIN/finger card so would say 2 to 3 weeks max from finger print to card(s) in hand for me.
I also did HAZMAT prints at the same time and about the same time of 2 weeks got my letter saying I could take my test.

BTW I said no to that question.

I couldn't dot the HazMat part as I am still a student and don't even have my cdl permit yet.
