I love reading about this industry and have really learned a lot. I had no idea the sacrifice all you drivers make to put food on your table, as well as just about everything in my house. Thank you! So, my question is.... What does "have my own authority" refer to?
Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah or whatever you celebrate.

Basically that you are a free agent,
under your own authority you are the the boss and you handle all the paperwork, finding loads ( or having someone do that for you) doing all of your filings, insurances etc.
You are the whole company from start to finish, with that as with any business if you are the owner there can be rewards for your hard work or failures for not doing it right or efficient, you can usually make more but are also on the line to loose it all if not planned out well -

Also You are the MC, Motor Carrier, like Swift, Werner, JB Hunt etc.
One pony trucking company.

And federal government grants and can take away authority to operate.
Blessings for You and Yours!!! -
hey, i'm going to expand on this question
can anybody go and apply and get their own authority? like can I apply and get one shortly afterwards or is there a wait and a background check and credit check and everything or how does that work?
disclaimer: I have no plans on doing so I am just wondering -
I think getting a company to insure a new cdl driver would be the biggest hurdle, can it be done? maybe but probably a higher rate, they usually want experience, it might be easier starting our small like an ltl pick up set up and working your way up

here's another question, i plan on being a company man for a couple of years. will i learn all the different regs for the different states by paying attention and asking a few question from fellow truckers and maybe a leo?
merry Christmas
thanks -
When you get issued a DOT number from FMCSA that is when you because authorized or get your own authority
.You literally have to fill out paper work with FMCSA be authorize to haul freight, unless you operate under somebody else's authority
But yes every truck on the road must be authorize to operate.
