All I can say about the whole subject is,if you can DO NOT get it from a company. Pay for it yourself and do the research to find a company that suits your need as well as the needs of your family. Good Luck in which ever way you choose.

If you pay for own schooling most trucking companies will reimburse your tuition. Or at least most of it . And you won't be stuck in a contract with a company that might not work out for you.
| |||
If you go through a company school I would pay for the school and not finance it through them and then they can't hold you to a contract.

PAY FOR IT YOUSELF! Save your money for school. DO NOT owe a truck company anything! This way you will be a "free agent" and owe no company money or time. The borrower is slave to the lender! Believe me, you don't want to be a slave to your first driving job. Best case scenario is cash payment for school. Most CDL schools will offer discounts for straight cash. This is what I did and my first company had a no contract/no pay for school/ policy. That was great because it gave me great peace of mind. I was free and could make my own decisions on employment. Before when I went to my CDL mill school, i worked over a year at a very difficult job saving most of what I made. I entered the CDL school w/lots of money, but I didn't tell the school that. One day in class, the finance woman pulled me aside and said, "I'm sorry, but your school loan was not approved." I laughed and told her I didn't apply for a school loan. (Appearently, the school I went to automatically applied for loans for ALL its students.) Then I asked her how much the school would cost if I paid straight cash. She quoted me about $1000 less. "You'll have the money tommorow morning," I said. The next day I brought my payment in $100 bills wrapped in rubber bands. Their jaws dropped and they looked at me like I was some kind of gangster or something. So funny, NEVER BORROW MONEY IF YOU CAN AVOID IT!!!! Last edited by MXH; 08.28.2007 at 08.01 PM.

Couldn't say which school to attend, or where one may get specialized training, like car hauler(not all that specialized) and lowboys, both of which require a good amount of attention. My dad owns a truck, so I learned to drive easily. That said, I still decided to attend a school because I knew that would make getting a job much easier in the future. I paid plenty for the school too, even with cash. They do things differently. You are told to double clutch, for example. I'd never done that before school and was actually concerned about it... As others have said though, if you can avoid a loan, avoid it! If you can avoid a company training program, avoid that too, unless it's after your initial training and they're paying you to do it as well as requiring it for employment.

Don't expect to get good experience from any school. The schools are there to teach you the basics and get your CDL. You have to get good experience from driving and in my opinion to get "good" experience your have to keep a positive attitude and learn everything you can everyday. I would play a game with myself and I would try to do better that day than yesterday. Please don't thin that once you're out of CDL school you're a professional. That's a skill that takes time and knowledge.

My 2 cents Listen I am no smarter than anyone else all I did was research. I went to the same school as the driver solutions fellows sat in the same class drove the same trucks I paid 1750 they owed 4600 what do you think. When they where done they went to work for company's that paid them 28 to 32 cents a mile I am getting paid 35 cents a mile.I picked who I work for Driver solutions picked who they worked for and I saw a lot of guys get moved around. They started at one company and left with another.Don't think you are going there and you work for this company or that company cause you don't you work for driver solutions. The company's that use them don't even know you exist yet.They called those guys the whole time I was there asking them for this paperwork or that it was real stressful on those fellows.Can you imagine sitting on a 4600 dollar debt and not be sure if you have a job yet. They signed company paperwork that took 3 hours to sit through I went home and took a nap that day.I understand if you don't have the means or the money then you have to go to driver solutions but please do it with open eyes people. It will get you your cdl but it does come with a ton of strings attached. Gashauler is right all the school does is get you your cdl what you do with it is up to you .Good luck people.Later
