I already have my CDL B and I want to get my CDL A permit. Do I have to take the general knowledge test again or can they just issue a permit for a CDL A?

Depending on your local state laws you might just have to take combination vehicles and air brakes. That is if you didn't take air brakes when you got your class B.
RjSchiffler Thanks this. -
Cool thanks, I don't have air brakes. I just have passenger and school bus endorsements. Class B sucks I cant find driving job except for school buses.

I was pretty sure the biggest difference between B and A was combination vehicles, and then that you'd have to do the pti/skills/road tests in a class A not a class B truck.
-
To get your hard license you'll have to do all those things, but just for the paper permit all you have to do is pass tests.
-
With all the building going on, did you check with concrete companies or dirt haulers? just a thought
-
There aren't many dirt or concrete hauling jobs on craigslist or indeed and the few that I saw wanted a year experience driving one of those dump trucks. I'd rather be on the road for long periods of time anyway.

I just did the up-grade from class B to class A in CT. I had air brakes on my class B so I only needed to take combination test to get my permit.
When I took my combination permit test I also took my tanker & double & triple tests. Tanker was added to my class B right then.
Once I had my permit and time behind the wheel I had to do the pti/skills/road tests in a class A truck with state inspector to get my hard copy license.
Now before I took the road test (about 2 weeks before) I had my finger prints & back ground done for HAZMAT & TWIC card. Just before I paid for the class A hard license I took the HAZMET test so it could be added to the license with out more $$ spent.
Best thing to do is check with your state DMV so you know just what you need to do.
Good luck
Dave ----RjSchiffler, Saturday and droo Thank this. -

you will have to have the air brakes and combination endorsements... and a road test ' so you may need to go to school to get a cdl-A thats worth much
haz-mat and tanker would also be good..
