Do I have to get a DOT Physical card BEFORE gaining a CDL Learner's Permit, or can that wait until I'm about to upgrade to the real deal?

I want to get the permit before heading to Prime's school, but if I must have a physical as well I won't have the money to do both.

Prime drivers are better to answer your question of course. But I think you would have to wait till you get to Prime to take physical by their own doctor.Prime will be paying for your schooling so im thinking the physical is included.

I and the rest of my school mates could not take the permit test with out getting a medical card.
The school had the Dr. on hand the 2nd week of school. IIRC it was 6 weeks for the drug test so you had time to "study".
Once you have the card in hand you had to self certify on line and fax the long forum to DMV before you took the permit test.

I'm not asking about taking the test at Prime. I want to do it here in Illinois before leaving. The DMV site seems unclear on exactly when a DOT card is required. Unless I'm daft, I assume you are saying Illinois requires a physical first?

In the state of Missouri, you must have a DOT Health Card before you can sit and take the permit test. I would suggest that you wait until you get to Prime unless you have money to burn as they use to require you pay for the test.

I was afraid of that. I suppose that means taking the HAZMAT twice when returning here to this silly state. Hopefully the rest will easily transfer over so I don't have to take all tests again on top of the driving/pretrip tests.

I don't remember how they handle that as the trainees that I had were all MO residents. It should be like any other state exchange where you walk in, show them your home address proof and pay your money. Who is going to pay for your background checks for the HazMat and will you need that to go out with your CDL trainer or your second stage trainer? That is a lot of cash to be laying out for either you or Prime. I would of thought you would take your hazmat when you go back to your home state and exchange your MO CDL for your home state CDL. But, don't quote me as it has been a long time since I trained for Prime and at that time a CDL training truck did not pull hazmat.

Not taking that test twice would be grand! The others I can do in MO and just transfer over. I can relax, then. LOL As far as background checks, who cares? By that point, it won't matter. The money will be there. It's not as if it'll cost thousands. LOL

In IL you do NOT need a medical card to get a permit. You do NOT need a medical card to get a CDL either. You can have an IL CDL without a medical card. You need the medical card to get a job not to get the CDL. That being said a school could make you get a medical card if the want to.

Are you absolutely sure about that? My former plan was to study-study-study until Tuesday, take the permit and endorsement tests, and then head out Saturday for Prime. If I can go back to that particular plan, then I will! I'd rather hit those simulators and the other necessary orientation things without also taking a few hours to take exams at Prime. Time will be crowded enough there. LOL
