XM Radio - Open Road channel

Hi all,
Today I was running back to the town I moved from to clean up the house and stuff and on the way there and back, I tuned into channel 171, Open Road...aka the truckers channel.

Just wondering what everyone thought of the talent on there

In the morning, I heard Dave Nemo and I thought he was pretty good. Had some tech stuff and his show was sort of trucker related with info and music here and there. callers and stuff and he seemed to make it interesting

Then I heard Bill Mack who...to me is just annoying. I really didn't understand the point of his show from the parts I listened to. That and his annoying voice he does for that other character....argh! Little to nothing related to trucking that I picked out.

Then I heard Dale Summers or the Trucking ####. He was pretty good as well, tying in news and such and his opinion and his sense of humor (at times not my own, but entertaining) kept me listening.

Then I heard about 15 minutes or so of the LandLine show which was run by OOIDA. Seemed pretty decent in tying in the news and relevant info.

One thing i thought was rather tacky was everybody and their advertisements / sponsers. Sort of takes away from your credibility when you keep saying every company is a good company and you should work for them or try out such and such product..etc.

Anyways...just wondering what everyone else thought.

Personally, I like Bill Mack. Much of that is because I have listened to him since I was a kid when he did the midnight show on WBAP. He is different from the others in that he is really a "fan" of the trucker, and focuses his show on the drivers that call in. I am also a big Willie Nelson fan ( he happens to be a 3rd cousin of mine, although we have never met), and I like listenting to Willie during the show on Wednesdays.

Dave Nemo is great. He puts together a very nice show.

Dale Sommers - I cannot stand to listen to this show. I am definitely not a fan of the trucking ####.

Trucking Business and Beyond - The name of the guy that does this show on the weekends escapes me, but there is some really good info here. I am usually at home on the weekends and only catch one day of the show though.

The ads, I could care less about. Somebody has to sponsor this radio time, and the show hosts are obligated to talk fairly about them. You have to take it with a grain of salt. Never go to a company just because someone that hosts a trucking show talks good about them.

bULLWINKLE,

I agree very much with most of your post , we share alot of the same opinions in regards to OPEN ROAD. Something that amazes me is the way that the Truckin' #### 's show has changed over the years . I Listened to him on AM back when he first started his show on the BIG ONE WLW in Cincinnati. You can pick his son Steve who took over his father's over night spot there. When I first started listening to ####'s show then, it was very entertaining & ALL DRIVERS could call in!!!! Now he has made himself the king of the GRIPE & WHINE line for CRYBABY drivers, gives special phone #'s to drivers that #### wants to talk to & if you're not one of his buddies you will not get in his show. His show has become BORING, STALE & lacks entertainement value IMO.
Now Dave Nemo on the other hand is what every "truckin/ DJ wants to be ....interesting , not ONLY just totally obssessed with truckin' issues & brings relevant items to the discussion table & ACTUALLY plays music !! #### plays NO MUSIC anymore & thinks the only reason we listen to him is to find out what he & his "buddies " think !

I certainly enjoy Kevin Rutherford's show , I think he is doing a great job ! I just wish he WOULD SPEAK UP & talk a little LOUDER !!!! I turn it up to listen & when a commercial comes on it cracks my windshield !
To close ....these are only my thoughts for whatever they are worth.

Bill Mack is a complete "bore" to listen to.

Dale Summers, well a complete waste of time. You want to listen to the "same song" nite after nite. I quit listening to him long ago.

Dave Nemo, a pleasure to listen to. I really enjoy the show.

Kevin Rutherford has the business show that is live on Sat. and Sun, 4pm-7pm(Eastern). You come away "educated". Kevin has a website, "kevinonxm.com". You want to learn? Listen!

Thumbs down

The ONLY time I listen to this channel, is when I know they are covering a relevant and important topics to the industry. Which isn't often, since they don't get much crossover ads on other channels.

I find most, if not all of the stuff to be boring and irrelavent. I can surf the web and get 99.9% of the "mentions" they have, with a lot more precision and depth.

As far as I'm concerned, The Open Road is just another arm of the trash truck stop advertisements (aka magazines) you see displayed outside any truckstop. 100 pages of nothing....unless you enjoy reading Dart ads all day.

The only exception to that statement, The Trucker.

As far as the #### goes.....the name fits him well.
