There was a guy in my class that kept his class A from the Army. He drove 5tons with military vehicles on flatbeds. Told me they would back up to a ramp in the middle of huge field to off load, and was the best job he ever had.

Most states if not all states say you have to get a license if you live in that state within 30 days.
You also can not have 2 licenses from 2 different states.
So if you are going to live in IL. Then you will need to transfer your CDL to that state. Now best thing to do is call the state you will be living in on what is needed to transfer your CDL as I have seen different things posted were some states you just pay for the CDL all the endorsements a and you are good. Other states you have to take the endorsements test again and pay for them & CDL. Also check to see what proof is needed that you live there. You may need to show proof of insurance for your personal car/truck otherwise you can only drive your employers co. trucks and nothing else un-less you insure you license.
I know NC you just need to pay for CDL & endorsements, no testing, and you are good as I called them. They also told me about the insurance deal above too.

I am not entirely sure on how this information helps the o/p with his license transfer from one state to another?
To the o/p. best to contact the state where you will reside in for information. Some states it is indeed a simple transfer over, some require written questions testing, I think I once heard here on these boards, that a road test is required as well?mosstrap Thanks this. -
All I had to do when I graduated trucking school in Wisconsin was bring my Wisconsin "hard copy" to my local DMV in Iowa, and pay $5 to have it transferred to an Iowa license---no testing over again, just pay for the plastic and picture. Ask your Illinois DMV.
I say "hard copy"...because I remember bringing the paper copy into my DMV, and they would not accept it. I had to drive BACK to the nearest DMV office in Wisconsin and swap the papers out for hard copy, and then all the way back to my DMV in Iowa and transfer THAT to my home state. Pain in the rear!Last edited: Jan 27, 2015

Better call the IL DMV. There have been posts on here that drivers had to do everything over again, including the skills test. I remember one driver moved back to IL and had a job waiting, but failed the skills test, so he was in big trouble with the new job. IL is the worst state in the nation concerning CDL's.

I thought he was coming out of the military with a Class A. Military class A can be transferred to any State in U.S. is what I understood.
