Hey All,
I am planning on attending a CDL school in Mar, and I'm afraid I may have made a grave error in applying to several companies.
When I was stationed in Okinawa in '99 I got a DUI on base. I received an Article 15 and a demotion for my actions. I have since gone on to RETIRE honorably. I know for a FACT that the DUI was never reported on my MVR. I have had a SECRET security clearance renewed since the DUI, and I've also bought several firearms, and gotten my concealed weapons permit. All of these things require a background check of criminal history.
When I was applying for several companies, I marked NO to the question asking if I have EVER gotten a DUI. I understand that I technically lied on the application, but thought "why raise a red flag over something 15 yrs old that wouldn't otherwise come up". Now I'm not sure what I should do. I've read on here how some peoples background checks reveal some crazy stuff.
My questions are...
How far will they look into my military record beyond my DD214?
If I come clean with my recruiters will I be allowed to resubmit or amend my applications, and how would this affect the outcome of an orientation?
Should I just leave it alone and not worry about it unless it comes up, since it is 15 years ago?
Is there ant way I can do the same background check on myself before I take any action either way?
Thanks for any advice.
Did I ruin my trucking career before I even started school?

It'll never come up unless you make mention of it. The only way it might come up is if you were applying to drive for a carrier who hauled sensitive or dangerous materials and required security clearance and ran extensive background checks to include your military record. Typically the average carrier won't bother to pull any military background.

15 years is long enough, dont worry about it

Only problem you might encounter is trying to get into CANADA they go back as far as they can on criminal charges checking.
They can also check MILITARY RECORDSLast edited: Feb 1, 2015

Canada is ridiculous with how they do that with American drivers going in. Like they don't drink up there and American drivers are all drunks

I went thru a similar experience and I wouldn't worry about it, most companies insurance determine how far they search back from 3 to 10 years, they can search your MVR from the time you were issued your 1st license at 16 till present if they want. As far as Military record as long as you were discharged honorably and your DD214 says such they don't search beyond that, no need to. I worked in recruiting and when you need drivers, its if the insurance will cover the driver most of the time, a road test, previous employment verification, MVR check, DAC & PSP check and pre employment drug screen results and if everything checks out your good to go.

Whats PSP?

I wouldn't pay much mind to it. It's all about your MVR. If you discharged honorably as well, they aren't going to delve into that. Good luck to you and thank you for your service. -
