Starting school next week... They don't have any local or many regional running companies. The more research I do on the bigger companies show them as being bottom feeder companies and kind of takin advantage of new hires needin exp but the turnover rate is extremely high even with experienced drivers. Do they get a bonus or something?
do the driver schools make money off companies they "represent"?

It wouldn't surprise any of us if a driving school was recruiting students in exchange for a kickback.

One student posted recently that the first day of school, the instructor passed out applications for Schneider, Werner, Swift and no other companies.
Doesn't matter if the school gets kickbacks, you can shop around with dozens of companies and it's none of the schools business; they don't even have to know about it.gnewb12, crzyjarmans and Vilhiem Thank this. -
It wouldn't surprise me a bit. The CDL mill I went to had a handful of "mega" recruiters in...no one else. The instructors only mentioned local driving jobs as something that you could get to once you "paid your dues" with a **** paying OTR gig.
As Chinatown said...do your own research. Despite what you'll hear here and elsewhere...it is possible to find better gigs right out of a CDL school. -
Schools let recruiters in so they(recruiters) will accept the school as a reputable place to hire students from,as well as getting a kick back from the recruiters for everystudent that goes to their company.

Trainco recently started charging companies who accept one of their students. So yes, only the companies willing to pay their per student fee would be able to have their applications put into your hands.
My company refused and no longer goes there to recruit. However, if I understand it correctly, if you do the research and find Garner on your own, they can take you. So be sure to look for the smaller to mid-sized companies for more options. YES, you can be home every weekend straight out of school and be paid well. A school in my state, was "given" a condo sleeper from Werner. It is registered as Werner being the owner.

1. The newbie getting his 6 months in, and finding a better paying job.
2. The company the new hire works for isn't increasing his pay fast enough. Seems companies will do more to get a new driver than they will to keep a good driver.
3. Most newbies will hire on with the first few offers. Because they're all about the same, it really doesn't make much difference. But after your 6 months or year, a driver can find a company that better fits him/her. As in local or regional runs that get them home a lot more often. going from being home every day, to not seeing even the town you live in for several weeks at a time, takes a toll on newbies. And their families. It's a shocker... The first year, ever conversation with the family is "when you coming home." In the 11 years I was OTR, I can't remember one conversation when I didn't tell my wife or kids when I was going to be back. -
I attend Roadmaster and they have Swift and Werner trucks that are on loan the instructors told me. They are pretty much worn out junk I might add. So, yes they get first chance at the students. I will not be going to work for either of them. I've obtained employment on my own with a non mega flatbed company that pays new CDL holders a decent living wage and good home time, if you want it. There are many reputable carriers out there that will hire students. Just have to do some research and leg work to find them. Chinatown is a good resource of information. He posts alot of great information for us newbies. Based on information I read on a few of his posts I contacted a company and have been hired by them. And no, not a prehire, actually hired. They don't play the game of come up here and we might hire you. They have already done my background checks, employment verification,MVR, etc. Only have to drug test and produce a CDL and certificate from school and start orientation for a week then on the road with trainer for 4-6 weeks. Not team driving, actual training.
