Ok I have been reading posts and gathering info on this site for about a month now. I am currently an unemployed career chef who needs a change, I am waiting to hear from the state if they are going to provide me with cdl training, if not I am going anyway. I have been studying on my own and feel I can pass the written part, do I go ahead and get my permit or just wait to get it through the school? ty John

Welcome!! I would go ahead and get the permit out of the way if you have already studied for it.
Good luck in school & withe the new career!
ALso take your time on the written...they wanna be kind of tricky with the questions on the test. -
Get permit...put where you live in your profile...general area...this will help people give you better info.

Ty, is there an expiration on the permit?

Yes there IS a time limit on ALL PERMITS from each and every state!
You would be better served to either go in person to your local DMV and inquire, or call them. But if YOUR DMV is like so many across this great land of ours, you will NOT BE on "hold", you will be on "FORGET"!
My state as an example, the CDL permit lasts ONLY 90 days.
In another state that I am very familiar with, the CDL permit last 2 years!
SO until YOU GET an exact expiration date, DO NOT GET your CDL permit.
If your state helps pay for CDL training, the school WILL TELL YOU when to get the permit. If say for instance, you get the permit now, and it takes you longer to complete the course? Then of course you know, another trip to the DMV IS required, as well as MORE money for yet another permit (or permit renewal).
I wish you the very best, but please contact your DMV FIRST!Last edited: Mar 3, 2015

There is no 'usual'. Mine was good for 90 days.
There is no reason to get the permit any sooner than you need to, and that would be at the beginning of school when everyone else gets it.
That way you won't come up short on time when you start working.
It's good to be prepared, but having a permit that is already old when you start school is a disadvantage. -
In Ohio the permits last six months. I'd say wait until you know when your first day of class is, and shoot for getting your permit a couple weeks in advance. It'll save a lot of time having it ahead of time, just don't go get it now, not have cdl training for another four and a half months and then deal with having an expired one.
