My brother is interested in joining a truck driving school that I'm enrolled in, he's had a short period of job hopping, lay-offs from temp agencies. He's would like to know before enrolling into the training program if he will be able to find a job in trucking with one of the "starter companies" Swift, Prime, CR England. Would it be best for him to wait it out?

Do a bit of looking around the forums. Swift and Prime are generally pretty good, as far as starter companies go. Yes, people debate that, but most of the people who actually drive for those two companies are happy there. (FYI, I drive for Swift.)

As for CR England... Everyone agrees that they are the worst. Even the people who drive for them. Unemployment is generally considered to be preferable.

As for the job history... job hopping, especially at the "minimum wage" level, shouldn't be much of a problem. Extended unemployment (over six months) will need to be justified.

These are recruiter questions; call them and ask.

Starter ones should take him with work history. Work history comes into factor with experienced drivers. example: 10 companies in 2 years is a red flag.

I would say get the CDL and then go out and look. Does the school have job placement and do outside recruiters stop by the school? I know sometimes you can’t go by school placement because some tell you what you want to hear ask how I know!

I base this on my experience and changing careers. I came from I.T. (computers) and most of my jobs were outsourced so I would work projects as a sub-contractor. Some would be a month long or the last was 3 years but most were thru the same head hunter (Co.) so my resume shows a few different places & managers it also shows I was sub-contractor thru the same Co. for a long time.
As long as the places he worked are willing to give references like mine are I don’t think he will have too many problems. I am not with a mega Co. because of medical waiver keeping me from doing so.

I've had at least 50 jobs in my 36 years on this planet. And I was accepted at Henderson. 6 jobs in the last 4 years.

Dozens of companies will hire him. Don't just focus on the so-called "starter companies" because that's a myth that you have to pay dues with starter companies.
Put your location on your profile then many drivers on here can give tips on where some good jobs are that hire new CDL grads.

Trucking is still considered a scum sucking, low life, blue color, redneck job. These employers don't expect much. Although, we are paid 5x better than most think.

I live in Minneapolis, I've been told to look for better companies to start with, if anybody knows any good places to start, that would be awesome.
