I know this topic has been covered repeatedly but I need a little help.I struggled today trying to get grasp on 13 speed. 5h to 6l was giving me most problems. Can shift good when not loaded and drive it like a 9 speed. When loaded I need all gears so shift accordingly. One problem is that I am learning to float at same time I and trying to learn gear box. The truck likes to shift at lower rpm than I am used to and sometimes I don't have enough speed for 6l. Do you guys preselect 6low on range and just lift slightly and and shift? Things went a lot better when I went back to double clutching I must admit. I am used to running up to about 1500rpm but truck likes about 12 to 1300 rpm when floating. Should I just adjust accordingly? I am also having trouble on downshifting,do you guys drop whole gears,for one would you go 8h to 7h or what is traditionally the practice. I even notice that my trainer occasionally slips up on the 5h to 6l shift. This truck is refurbished with new CAT 475 and new gear box yadayadaya is it just because it's new or its just me? I am used to picking things up pretty quickly but a little disappointed in myself for not grasping this as fast as I would want. Any input is appreciated and I am thankful.

A new or rebuilt trans will always shift harder and tighter since the teeth arent wore off the gears yet, and everything is still tight.
Just remember you are essentially doing half shifts across the board when going from notch to notch Splitting. Downshifting with the splitter you only need to rev the engine roughly half as much, It took me literally years to get used to that. I usually ending up overreving on a downshift, and had to wait for the RPMS TO fall, which cut into my speed and hillclimbing.
Watch how the tach behaves when you split within a gear, from say 8h to 8low, so the RPM spread from 8low to 7high might be just a little tighter.
I got used to just revving about 300rpms higher to do a split downshift and it fell right in.
Climbing steep long hills is where you will learn to love a 13, you just need practice. Im ib a automatic freightliner and wish to God I stayed i the older truck that I had before. -

Should I just stop floating for now and just focus on my shifts. I can float 11 out of the 13
Also what's best way to recover in 13? By the time I screw around I end up going back to previous gear if going up through box. Down a whole other story. I am kind of figuring out unless under 25mph or so it's 7hour 7l
