I just read the good thread on US281 between San Antonio and DFW. My question is, is 281 good between Wichita Falls and Lampasas? I am driving from WF to Nolansville Monday and I would gladky give up a few minutes and miles to avoid DFW.
I would give up quite a few things in life to avoid DFW, really.
Thanks!

One of the wonderful things about Texas is the number of decent routes. You should be fine on a US hwy in Texas. The worst thing that happens is when you get caught behind one of those 'middle lane slow driver that are deathly afraid of falling off the road so they ride down the middle of i35 but today he's on the two lane running 25 mph in a 70 zone because he is afraid and fearing for his life and oh how everyone else wishes that he would have kept his hiding behind the moniker of "safety" arse on the bigroad' type steerwheelholder.

my solution is to not go to texas
the 80-90 miles from Liberal to Tucumcari

If you can plan your trip for off-peak it's not bad at all. Software is available to spell out construction projects, although now that winter is pretty much over, projects are springing up all over. Get it? "Springing up?"

Good road, speed it 70-75mph. I use it to avoid FW. -
I-35 is smooth sailing if you go thru it before rush hour.281 is a good route too I took it many times. But with respect you better learn to take busy lanes because there's going to be many times you'll have to.Like say Chicago,no matter what way you go you're going to run into major traffic.Same with the heartland of the East Coast, there every hour is rush hour.

I35--is NEVER smooth sailing--between construction-for at least the next 5 years--(and subject to full road closures any nite to hang steel) hi-congestion--and NIMRODS--it is subjec to be a parking lot at any time day or nite--which is why those of us on it regulalry refer to it as the southern extension of the Long Island expressway--I peddle Tx 4-50 weeks a year and avoid it like the plague...281 works--as does 77--depending on where you are going--and now for the worst kept secret in TX--the new toll bypass---CANNOT tell any license tag--other than TEXAS--it doesn't recognize out of state tags--ask me how I know...

Thanks for the replies gang. Yeah I have actually driven through dfw a lot. I just hate it. I will have no choice but to be leaving Wichita falls about 6:30 am Monday morning, which would put me in the metroplex at prime suck time. So 281 it is. Ol Hand, I like your thinking.
