Here are some of the latest articles from Landline magazine on the topic. I was investigating because I could be targeted with a higher BMI, so for one, needed to understand the "facts", and two, may choose to avoid looking to go to work for a company known to push sleep studies. You may have to copy/paste these URL addresses into your browser to get them to work.

I had read a few sleep apnea articles from LandLine, and OverDrive. It is sad that many DOT docs are saying that YOU MUST have a test.

I really have no more worries about anymore testing. My current DOT expires in 2 years. From there, I will be 60. I nary worry about anything, anymore once I reach that so very close to the magical number of 62, when I chuck it all away.

As some others here, I too know of a few people that can use a non-CDL driver, that would "fit the bill" for a soon to be retired person.

It is all you other, "youngin's" that I worry about, and your collective futures.

I say, fight this non-sense as hard as you can, by joining the OOIDA (at the very least), as number count when they go to Washington to fight for us. Some say OOIDA does nothing. I say, who else can we trust then, the ATA??????????????

I emailed my federal congressmen last week. I was ######## about ATA and speed limiters. As well as the integrity of the 34hour restart study. 65 mph might be fine for a good chunk of the country, but in the south west and above us (Nebraska, Kansas, ext) it doesn't make sense.
Plus I just see the govt looking for reasons to expand. Stupid all covering mandates for what an agency can make rules about.

Just had to renew my health card and they inputted my weight and height into the computer and got my BMI then neck size... it was close but I hit under the magic 17 inch neck size. I had to really suck in my double chins.

So my medical examiner is making me do a sleep study test based purely on BMI. She didn't measure my neck, she didn't listen to the fact that I don't snore, stop breathing (according to my wife), and that I dream very often (clearly entering REM sleep). She is refusing to renew my medical card until I show her the sleep study paperwork. The thing is my insurance won't cover it and it's $900. Is there anything I can do about this?

Hopefully there are some other people on the board with firsthand experience in this. You say she is refusing to renew your medical. This sounds like this has occurred some days in the past and the med examiner is holding an open long-form application???? What prevents you from going to a different DOT examiner?

Yes, she is refusing to renew my card. This occurred last week, my card expires in July. I suppose there is nothing stopping me from getting a second opinion. But that leaves me either paying another $90+ to different Dr. and "hoping" they don't say the same thing, or paying the $900 to get a sleep study done. I spoke with my family Dr., and she was very confused as to why they think I might have apnea even though I have none of the systems. Unfortunately my family Dr. is not certified to give med cards.

I'm thinking finding another examiner. Just my opinion though. Would be nice to know of one that is recommended by some other truckers.
