Hey everyone had a post earlier about finishing my first year out on the road. Question to all you exp drivers. It's the same question you all have prob answered a 1000 times. I live in Dayton ohio been running as a team with a mega reefer hauler for about a year ( my friends a lease op ) stayed on his truck to get exp and to see what life is like out on the road. Before I decided to lease or move to a better company driver position. I really would like to know the nuts and bolts of what type of cpm. I could be looking at as a driver with1 year exp going in to a new company. Any info or suggestions would help.

    Shaggy Thanks this.

I know company drivers after a year that get about 42-45 a mile. that's with decent company. My buddy runs at rohel (i think thats the spelling) and gets 45 a mile.

Thanks buddy. Just not sure what want to do. There are some aspects of otr I like like staying out on road then coming home and actually having time off. I'm not sure I take a local or regional job how home time and pay compare. Just starting to really dig in and so my due diligence. I know ups freight is hiring out in my area a lot of line haul in this area. Just not sure if that's a good deal or not.

I have thought about it my friend works there he's unloading freight off his truck all tricking day. I'm not lazy but that's a ton of work to do for the next 25 years.

Do you enjoy what you are doing now? If so, talk to your team mate to see if there is any way he could give you a bump in pay to keep you after you have a year under your belt. I am assuming since he is a lease operator, he controls the purse strings. No need to move if you like what you are doing, if you can get a bether pay package out of it.

What ever the cpm, do the math on 401k contribution, cost of medical insurance and a conservative estimate of detention pay, safety and mileage bonuses, etc. Don't settle for less than $60K/ year - that is easy to get in today's market. If a high cpm carrier has less miles, I consider that a god thing; why not have an easier job that pays the same?

Don't work for anyone until you get testimony from current drivers.

Go look at Crete Carrier. We have a terminal right in Columbus. Starting pay for 1 year is . 45 cpm for dry van and . 48 cpm for reefer.

Lots of info on their website and YouTube.

You got a year under your belt, that's good. Now, if your records clean no accidents, no tickets, no warnings on inspections. Start looking for bigger and better opportunity. Ever thought of hauking a tanker? While cents per mile is big don't get me wrong. Look at what else a company has to offer you. Could they be a teamster company? Do they pay detention? How long until it kicks in? Do they pay you to fuel the truck? Do they pay you to pre trip the truck? Do they pay you to sleep or layover while out on a load? How are the benefits? Luckily for me the company QC terminal in albany is union and on top of that the pay is great. Eveything I asked you in question I get paid for @ 18.00 per hour and there is no detention time. If I'm on duty and the wheels aren't turning the hourly kicks in immeaditly. Benefits even better.
