USA Truckers with a Gun

O.K., I don't want anyone to feel like they can't talk here, but I'm asking a legitimate question. As a guy who has a Concealed Carry Permit that's accepted in about 38 States, former Law Enforcement, and seems to have had one with me everytime I've traveled; I'd like to hear from the Pro's. Some guys I've talked to say they keep one in the truck, others don't. Certainly those who go to Canada and other gun-unfriendly places wouldn't take one, but I've seen enough bad things on the road, in rest areas, and truck stops, that tell me you should have one. Some say they are very discreet because of rules, regs, laws; others say they keep it unloaded in the rear compartment as allowed by interstate firearms laws, and only load it when they bed down in a place that looks a little creepy. Some guys take pepper spray and a tire thumper. Others say be very discreet with it, and it will never be known. I need the advise and look to the counsel of the pro's who are out there. THANKS!

Most companies have policies against firearms in the vehicle.

AGREED!

I have a permit as well to carry but still can't take a firearm on company property or have one in their trucks.

Yes Roadmedic is right. Most companies wont allow it. But the other part is your concealed permit doesnt transfer into a commercial level. As I understand the laws, we are basically forbidden to have one in almost every state. Since the DOT has the right to search your truck, inside and out, at any time they want the best bet is dont take one with ya. Who needs another thing to worry about right?

My safety director gave me a tip I doubt is true but I will pass it along anyway. Maybe someone here can clarify it.

He told us if we had a firearm to put it in a mail package. His claim was that state level DOT had no authority over US mail. I suppose that would mean it would have to be complete with addy and postage, but I dont know.

An argument can be made for and against having one the same as it is made about having one at home. Truthfully having one in the truck would almost serve a higher degree of 'self protection' than one at our homes. Then again at home we protect our families. I will die for my kids, but hey that load doesnt mean that much to me!

Unless something in the FMCSA rules has recently changed due to the Homeland Security stuff, I haven't seen anything in those rules saying a gun is not permitted by Fed rules.
