NFPA 1500 -1997, Fire Department Occupational Health and Safety Program, clearly states in 5-3.8, "A growth of beard or facial hair at any point where the SCBA facepiece is designed to seal with the face shall be prohibited for members required to use SCBA." Quoted from Appendix A-5-3.8 to the proposed NFPA 1500 standard, "... Thus an employer [the fire chief] using [providing] a SCBA to protect an employee [a firefighter] with a growth of beard at points where the SCBA facepiece is designed to seal with the face, is violating [OSHA] 29 CFR 1910. 134(e)(5)(i). This is regardless of what fit test measurement can be obtained " Based upon the OSHA standards, VDFP will continue to enforce the "No Beard" policy for all fire/rescue training involving SCBA in classes sponsored by the Commonwealth of Virginia . Further information is available in ANSI Z88.5 standard, Practices for Respiratory Protection for the Fire Service.
This all I can find, but I imagine it has something along the same lines as to why you can't have a beard.

I use to haul Haz Waste (5 years of it).You are req. to be clean shavin at all times. The reason for this is that when you goto most waste disposal's(NOT DUMPS OR PUBIC LAND FILLS) You may be req. to wear a Full or Half face resperator. With facial hair it causes the seal to brake between the face and seal. This is why you can't have facial hair. And is mandated at every fac. I have been to many disp. across the country and thats just the way it is.
Oh and if the job is for Clean Harbors....RUN!!!!

Same reason why the military has such strict facial hair requirements. Very little mustache and no beards at all. So the masks will have a good seal. I think the last branch that allowed beards was the Navy, and that was still a fairly long time ago.

I hauled Haz Waste for about the same amount of time. I remember one facility would not let you in if you had facial hair. IF you had any growth and did not have your own razor, one would be provided to you if you wanted to enter the facility. I think this was Dupont if I'm not mistaken. Oh and I remember Clean Harbors, I was screwed around by them in Baltimore a few times trying to get unloaded.

We all had to be clean shaven on Jan 01 1984 I shaved mine off, and the day I retired, it came back. I've tried shaving, and it keeps coming back, so I merely trim it now..

Dealing with hazmat issues, facial hair could be a problem from 2 ways.

1. Previously addressed with the respirator requirements.

2. Facial hair would retain chemicals and would not readily wash immediately off. This could be a major health issue. Companies would want to limit liability.
