Insomnia, how do you handle it?

Just wandering if any one knows of healthy remedies to help some one get a full nights sleep.

I don't drink coffee, chocolate or pop.
And I can't take sleeping pills.

4 or 5 hours is all I can tolerate and then I have to get up.

I'd like to get a grip on this before I get through a school and start driving.

Melatonin, magnesium and calcium at bedtime help some. It's also good for your body. Be sure not to take any other type meds close to the magnesium as it dilutes the strength.

hmm

Do you feel tired or lethargic the next day after getting 4-5 hours of sleep?

If you feel fine, don't worry too much about it, as we all have different sleep needs. Some people only need 4-5 hours per night. We also need less sleep as we age. I used to always need 8 hours of sleep, but this past year I can't seem to sleep beyond 6-7 and it had me frustrated 'til I realized that it didn't make me feel any more tired than usual so I just consider that an extra hour I get to use.

Now if you feel faitgued from getting only 4-5 hours you should probably see a doctor.

Same here, I only get 5-6 hours a night, and I'm fine. A little rough to get started at 2:00 in the morning sometimes, but once I get the blood pumping, no problem.
Even on my days off, I can get to bed early, only to wake up in the middle of the night, with nothing to do. Now that sucks.
But if you don't feel any ill effects from sleep deprivation, I wouldn't worry about it.

No, not too tired when I'm awake, Actually feel pretty good. I was just thinking it could be a problem when I finally start driving a big truck.

Just don't want to be distracted with sleep deprivation.

I like to listen to XM Radio to keep me alert during my drive. I get so interested in certain shows that time just flies by.

Keeping awake isn't a problem right now. I just worry it might change. Driving truck will have a real impact on my sleeping pattern and I will need to sleep sometime.

That's what I was thinking. My dad has sleep apnia. From what I understand, it's caused by not getting enough oxygen while you sleep, thus you wake up. However, he has COPD from smoking, and that's why his problem exists. They gave him a machine that's a mask pumping oxygen into you while you sleep. He went from sleeping two to three hours a night for about a year to sleeping 8-10. That's if he doesn't pull the mask off in his sleep.

I think your best bet is to visit the family physician. Good luck to ya.

Yeah I would defiently get checked for Sleep Apnea, it takes a toll on your body not getting proper sleep over a long period of time. I used to sleep 5-6 hours a night until diagnosed with Sleep Apnea (I never snored) and now get 8 hours a night good sleep. My sleep doctor said I may have taken 5-10 years off my life expentency by not sleep properly. Your body needs rest. Have your father try a Nasal pillow called Swift 2 it is much easier to sleep with, he'll probaly have to sleep with a strap around his head to kep his mouth shut, but it works real good. Plus theres a special pillow he can buy that allows his tubing to go down into cutouts on the pillows so he can even sleep on his side, it's awesome, cost about $60.00 but worth every dime.

Good Luck
