Hey, you forgot Mack engines, such as the model after which I named myself.

I think they are the longest living, coolest sounding, and have the lowest costs. Or should I say, had the lowest costs...

I think fuel economy has to go to Detroit though.

Excuse me while I at the idea that a Diptroit will last longer in terms of miles than a CAT or a Cummins.

Please pass what ever it is you are taking. I need some too.

Those old Macks were like the Energizer Bunny, the just kept going and going and going.................and some of the old transmissions were bulletproof.

I always say Mack has made the best truck over the CB and usually get hassled... Mack to me is the best truck ever built and its a shame you see little of them on the road... You go where tough trucks are needed such as mining ext.. you will definitely see a Mack....

Fuel mileage well it would be a toss up between Detroit and a Cummins.. I lean towards the cummins when it comes to fuel mileage...(listed engines)
Maintenance no doubt should go to Detroit
Cat if maintained correctly defiantly outlast other listed engines...

brand don't have much to do with it, it's the driver and maintainence. a well maintained detroit will outlast a beaten on cat

i run wreckers, so my answer is based on what i've driven and what i've towed in and why

cat- heavy, hard on fuel, hideously expensive to repair. one piece head, likes to lose head gaskets, and injector tips. will trash the whole head. big hp AND torque. will run about forever if taken care of, i work with an O/O that bought his pete new (86) and has over 3mil on it (3 inframes)

cummins. my personal favorite (460/525 split hp N14) excellent power, smooth, pulls good, got decent mileage if i didn't run at 2100 rpm all day. older ones, like N14's, had 3 heads, only replace the one damaged. will lose injectors, but no engine damage. strong jakes. forgiving when beaten on. will break jake springs if revved too high on jakes, but easy fix.

detroit ser 60 smallest engine. light, best fuel MPG. has the hp on paper, but nowhere's near the torque, usually 1400-1500 lbft, cat and cummins will normally be around 1650-1850 lbft. most likely to break a rod if over revved, lose injectors, blow turbos. most common engine on the road, so also the most likely to be towed in. i pulled 6 series 60's for every 3 cats and 1 cummins if it was an engine problem.

cat and cummins both sound good, i like cummins jakes better.
