| The standard breakdown of weights for a 5 axle unit is 12K on the steers, 34K on the tractors tandems, and 34K on the trailer tandems. There are some variations for some types of trailers like those with spread axles, but in general, the 12/34/34 numbers fit in. A typical van load is about 44k, a flatbed can usually haul up to 50, depending on the weight of the truck and trailer itself. Despite the ratings listed on the suspensions by the manufacturer, the weight limits still apply. Unless you get into heavy hauls, a typical 36-40k rear axle is plenty. |

| Well, bridge formula in most states is 12K/34K/34K (12,000lbs on the steer axle, 34,000 in the tractor tandem, and 34,000 on the trailer tandem). 40K on any axle will get you a ticket in every state without a permit. Combinations can carry a heck of a lot more weight safely than the law allows without a permit, but you will have to contact the manufacturers of the trailer and the tractor to find out the exact limits of the axles. So, yes, you can carry well over 40K on any tandem. As for the exact limit, call the makers. EDIT: Oops, Burky beat me to it. |
