Yea TSA will only issue one letter. If it is lost they will not re issue it. Hopefully the mail wont loose it. Sadly if they do it may require being fingerprinted again.

Off topic, but I think the USPS does a pretty good job overall. I can't recall ever having any letters, or packages for that matter ever getting "lost". And if ya think spending $5-6 to send a gift accross the country, think about taking it there yourself! Just say'n...

Not sure about Texas but the NC DMV had it in their computer already when I went down there today and got mine. You may be able to get it without having the letter in hand. Mine took exactly 1 week. I would call the DMV and ask them if its in the computer.

Yeah, maybe the letter's just for your file. And maybe they tell ya to wait 'til you get it in the mail just to keep you from pestering them.

There are a bunch of states that do 'recipricol' (sp?) fingerprinting of which Michigan is one. Texas doesn't participate in this but it saved you some money. It costs $94 for the fingerprinting which you must pay online to Hazprints and print the receipt. Take the receipt to any one of the fingerprinting locations in the participating states and get your fingerprints done. Then, it takes 6-8 weeks to get the letter in the mail. I got my fingerprints done when I took home time in August. Stayed with my mom for 9 days then co-driver finally got a trip through MI and picked me up. On day 10, she got a letter saying that I needed to re-do my fingerprints since the ones I did weren't clear enough to use. She forwarded the letter to me in Amarillo, and I had to try to match up where the sites were with where we were and try to get near a site, during business hours, with enough time to get the fingerprinting done. Finally got it re-done in OK City near the end of September and I'm still waiting for word. It's been about 6 weeks so it should be coming soon. Then, I have to get back to Michigan to take the test and pay the fee for the endorsement (they told me at the DMV that they won't give the test until I have my letter). Figure I might have it by January LOL!. Be patient, like you said, this is the government and sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. BTW, my co-driver got his letter in about a week, but when he was in the Marines he pulled White House duty and had a high level security clearance. I guess all they had to do was make sure he hadn't committed any crimes since then and he was ok. He teases me and says mine is taking so long because my family is middle eastern. Last time I checked, my Uncle Joe wasn't participating in any terrorist activities -- he was on the golf course (of course, his golf game may be considered to be a threat to national security to some -- he has a wicked slice lol!)

Hey Keelady- once your clearance has been issued, you can take the test whether you have the letter or not. Just like you said, SoS will get your info electronically.

I do know that Texas will only hold the Hazmat Endorsement Application for 90 days from the day you tested. After 90 days you have to reapply (not retest) because they shred the application in Austin after putting it on microfilm. Most everyone I have spoken with has it within 20 days depending on location. I was quoted 30 days at the DPS.
