i recently contacted about an ad that stated: need 40 class a or b transfer drivers. it was a vague ad. i was wondering if anyone has ever been a transfer driver or know what it's about? i assume i would be transferring vehicles from one place to another.....is this a good job?

Out on the west coast, that could be a reference to a dump truck pulling a transfer trailer. That is a 2 axled, trailer that has a smaller dump box on it. You dump the main dump box on the dump truck, then there is a process to slide the smaller box right inside the box of your trucks dump, and you then dump it. Then the small box is returned to it's trailer and the unit goes on it's way. They have never caught on outside of the west coast, and I am not sure if they are used in your area or not. If that's not it, then it could be just a term someone is using to describe whatever they want to have the drivers do.

I wonder if by transfer driver they mean the ones that haul trash out of the transfer stations?

That's possible, but the comment that they can use class A or B, tends to make me think it involves straight trucks, and they rarely haul waste from transfer stations in straight trucks, preferring about 48' disposal trailers. But a dump would come in on a B license, even with the trailer behind it.

A transfer truck is a dump truck setup.

It consists of a standard 10 wheel dump truck and a trailer. The trailer has a long tongue and slightly smaller box on it than the straight truck. When you arrive at the drop sight the trailer is unhooked and the driver then dumps the contents of the truck. Once the truck box is empty the driver then backs up to the trailer box and transfers the box off the trailer via rollers into the truck box, locks it into place and then dumps the trailer box contents.

This set up allows for getting around easily in tight areas, delivering different products to the areas with one truck, or making two different deliveries to two areas with one truck.

i found out what that job was about, they called me back.
it's a contractor position where you transfer a vehicle from one place to another. it could be a 4 wheeler, motor home, bus, tractor, tractor/trailer.

they give you a flat rate according to miles and include an extra travel expense for you to find your way to the next dispatch or home. sounds like alot of variety, however i wouldn't go into it broke.

I assume by the name you are either from or have some affinity to NC.

I now live in NC, but lived in PHX for twenty years and spent about 5 of them driving a transfer dump truck around that town.

Although the job you were reading about wasn't that kind of transfer driver, I thought I would at least follow up on my previous post and show you what one looks like now that I have enough post to do that, YEAH!





I'm not sure what kind of experience you have if any, but you might want to give All Star Trucking a call. They have a yard in Guadalupe and another on around Greenway Rd and Litchfield I think.

They are willing to hire drivers with little experience. They will start you out in a 10wheel dump truck and then bump you up to a transfer truck in the future if you want to.

Pioneer trucking is also a good place to get a start, but they don't pay as well.

It was the most enjoyable trucking job I have every had, only problem is it payed horrible.

At least I was home every night and on weekends.
