Need Some Advice

Me and my father are getting a Ram 3500 Mega Cab in a few weeks for the farm, and as you can imagine the price is pretty steep. My uncle drives a semi and suggested that we haul with our new truck on the side, which could potentially turn into full time work. We were considering hauling vehicles, farm equipment, pipe, etc..... We just have alot of questions. Is the money pretty good? Do we need a CDL? What is the insurance like? And lastly, is it worth it?

it's been a few years ago, but used to haul alot of horses and cattle with 3/4 and ton diesel pickups. i found that the cost of the truck, plus, hauling loads that were too heavy, just tear up and wear out the truck. profit realized was little. good luck in what ever you do. poppy

For the cost of that new pickup you can buy a very nice semi that will last far longer with proper care and haul far more than that pickup will ever dream of.

I know some guys in Amish country that do very well with a hot shot rig because of several reasons. The Amish are not operating in that big of a fashion to need a semi, also many of their farms and farm roads are not big enough to get a semi in and out of.

I too was thinking of doing that, hauling fifth wheels or other campers around...or hauling cars. The money just isnt there and you dont get a lot of the tax benefits as a regular truck driver.

That and an empty 3500 mega cab gets SLIGHTLY better mileage than a Peterbilt...keep that in mind.

My boss took me in a ride in his as he drove me around town while I was training. He told me the mileage it was getting and I thought it was horrible...and then he added that it was going downhill!
