Questions about reefer units...

Well, I am no newbie to driving, but a reefer unit is NOT something I am familiar with! But since the Boss jst bought a bunch of these things, I guess we are stuck with them.

Here's the question... It was cycling, and then it just jumped over to a "preheat" cycle, and then went back to cooling! No-one in the shop is familiar with them, and I certainly am not... What's going on here, and how do I fix it?

And where can I get some kind of manual on a thmo-king reefer?

I have had a reefer do the same thing, when I was hot loaded. The reefer was running full blast, but because the product was too warm, it wasn't cooling quickly enough. And in the process, the coils were freezing up, so it would go to a defrost cycle and then kick back to a chill cycle. After a day-and-a-half, the product was finally cool enough that it stopped this! My solution? Pulp the product and refuse to let the jerks hot load me again.

BTW, I am no HVAC (of reefer) expert, so I know some of my terminology is incorrect!

Generally, that would be defrost mode. However, this could have been test mode. Did you just start it up?

Ice buildup will cause a reefer to throw on some heat to clear things out. This shouldn't take more than a few minutes. And is normal throughout the length of haul.

Wait til you get a load of fresh bread LOL. Hot from the oven...bagged..and placed on your truck.

From 80+ degrees to -10 . Yup, it's a wonderful thing to listen to for 2 days.

It probably was just defrosting. OTOH, you could have a problem there. Make sure it is filled up with antifreeze/coolant.

I can't understand a company buying a "bunch" of reefers and not having anyone in the shop know ANYTHING about them. However it is a specialized field, and takes someone with the knowledge and the tools to repair them.

There are usually "contract mechanics" in any decent size area that specialize in this work.

You might take a look at: [LINK POSTED BY MEMBER] Only Members Can View This Truck Forum Link. in the experienced drivers forum.
