Signed up to go to CRST Van CDL school

I got a phone call today from CRST Van to go over my application. The recruiter ask some questions about some things ihad put on it. I know that CRST is a terrible company to work for but I tried schneider and was denied by them I just turned 21 and my dad is wanting me to go and work for a company to get some experience because he wants to start a trucking business with me. I'm kinda lost as what to do I know pay isn't everything that knowledge is power and that good stuff but I got a wife a 14 month old little boy so pay is kinda a big deal and my family is all about do it yourself with no help so I can't afford trucking school and CRST has the shortest contract term I've heard of 8 months. So anybody got some idea's please pass on so knowledge to my troubled mind lol.

I drive for CRST, I am happy so far. If you go under contract you will not make much money the fiirst year but neither will I. I came in with my CDL (I got help from the state of Michigan to pay for school). I have been told by my trainer and lots of other truckers, the first year or 2 get to love balonga, and other not so costly ways to eat your wont make your bills. You gotta look at some other threads and make up your own mind about CRST. They are a large scale compay there are bound to be drivers that don't like them or that don't wanna do there job right. The best thing to do is get your first year down and Keep looking for when the contact is done.

If your dad wants to start a trucking company , Why doesn't he pay for your CDL course. This leaves you with no obligation to another company and leaves it open for where and who with you get your experience.

I agree with Reniffk, when starting out especially a newcomer. You're not going to make alot of pay. Learn to live on the road, literally. What alot of newcomers think. is I can make it. It's only a year. Well, lots and lots of people think so. Guess what? It was harder than it looks and they quit. Now they have not enough experience and a big debt. OTR can be rewarding if you can plan carefully ahead. It's not your normal 9 to 5 job. It's a committment of better or worse.

I am not a trucker yet but as prior military it is most important that your wife understands you will be gone for extended periods of time. I was gone for a year once and many times from 6wks to 6 mos. So really really really make sure everyone is on board. If you look at all these threads you will see people very excited to be a trucker and then never seen on the threads again. Good Luck with your training and new company.
