Moving Company

I'm starting a new job tomorrow that has me driving for Mayflower. It will be my first job driving a tractor trailer. Has anyone worked for them or another moving company before? What should I expect with this job? I know that it will involve some days out on the road with a teammate as well as packing/unpacking and loading/unloading customers' things. Thanks in advance!

Mayflower/United Van Lines are owned by the same holding company. They are the same company running under two different names. That means that eventually you will make runs for UVL as well as Mayflower.

The company has agencies. There are the bigger agencies like McCollister's, Suddath, Sullivan, Armstrong and Planes. They own agencies under Mayflower and United.

There's animosity sometimes between agencies as well as cronyism and favoritism.

Two stories: I ran for an agency that exclusively listed one agency in another city as the destination agent and therefore giving them a piece of the action even though there were other agencies in that city that were better agencies.

The second story, I was enroute to deliver in a city and called (left voicemail) two days ahead to request labor. After 24 hours and no response I called again. I was told that the local agent didn't like my agent so they wouldn't provide labor for me. Huh?

You will have to develop you own network of labor (guys who help load/unload). The system is set up so that you call the OA (origin agent) or DA (destination agent) to request assistance. You may end up with quality guys and you may not. Talk with other drivers to see who they recommend in a particular city. You don't have to use the OA/DA labor, but they do have to be cleared (background check) to work with a Mayflower/United agent. The standard pay is $12/hr for a runner & $15/hr for a loader. They will want more and a good crew should.

I have to go now but I will check back later and add on as necessary.

I have a buddy that moves furniture OTR.His company is alot smaller them mayflower though lol.It seems like thing slow down this time of year.It can be pretty physically demanding.I hope you are in decent shape lol. When he is goin good he might stay out 3-4 weeks and make about $950 a week.He wants me to drive with him,but I dont like messin with other peoples stuff lol..As long as you dont break nothin and learn how to pack a truck it should be ok.The only bad part is fnding yourself in residential areas alot..Always watch for low telephone/cable wires. He looks it though. He dosnt bump docks and keeps movin pretty good about 9 months out of the year..You might like it.....Good luck bud..
