BUT it will down shift or upshift on it own while in High Gear. Can some one explain this tranny to me, and also what is its Secret. I am grinding dem gears to much in this truck and can't seem to find the right RPMs to shift up or down..... Please Help.

sounds like a werner truck, we have 8 speeds with 9 being automatic (13 speed trannys, they just pulled out the high range splitter, at least that is what i was told)

try down shifting around 1100 rpms. i hope it helps....

Is this something common. I like the Split 8 and 10 I don't like the super 10 and I like the autoshift cept not as much power it seems. But this tran gave me fits tonight.
Do I rev it up to 1300? or should it be 1500? I cant' seem to get it to sync unless I go to the low side at 800 and slowly slide it into gear.... I know. that is not good to do. But it is better than grinding....

my W-9 likes it best when I rev it to 1500 when I'm around 1100-1200 looking to down shift. of course operator error comes into play for me when I'm tired. I like to blame the truck but it's me and I know it :biggrin_25523:

Sounds like you picked up a truck with a "Top-2" trans, which allows the trucks to select it's choice in the upper two gears. That trans is based on the super 10 mechanicals that makes up most autoshifts. Somewhere on the truck, on the visor or on a plate somewhere nearby will be the shift pattern and the suggested rpms. If not, in the paperwork for the truck, usually in the owners manual, the manufacturer will include instructions for operating the various trans available in that model.

I am transporting this truck and I can't find the manual, nor any shift pattern. It bums me out. I found this and I'll quote it here...... "The present invention relates to a control valve assembly for a splitter-type compound change-gear transmission allowing both manual and automated splitter shifting. In a preferred embodiment, the present invention relates to a control valve assembly for a vehicular partially automated splitter-type compound mechanical transmission system of the type requiring manual shifting in the lower ratios and having automatic splitter shifting in the upper two or more ratios."
So you are right about that. it is one of those. The splitter is Not a UP DOWN one. there is a FWD REVERSE switch only. I am somewhat new to this and I have only driven trucks with the UP DOWN. So I am really having a hard time down shifting this rig. I wish I had the one I drove yesterday back. Just your standard 10 speed. So simple. I miss it.

It will work the same way as a regular 10 speed in the lower 8 gears, but uses the Super 10 pattern. We'll assume you are starting in low, even though bobtail you can probably easily take off in 4th or 5th. Start out in low gear with the button on the low side, usually the reverse position. Accelerate through the gear, then move the button forward. Release the throttle, wait a oment, then return to the throttle, and the truck will shift to the next gear without any lever movement. Then, accelerate through that gear. Before shifting, move the switch back to the low (rearward) position, then move the lever to the next gear position in the sequence. Keep repeating this sequence of shifting until you reach 9th gear, at which point the trans will handle the shifting duties.

Basically, instead of shifting 5 gears, making a range shift, then shifting 5 more as a regular 10 speed does, what you are doing is making a range shift in each gear position. if you have ever driven a straight truck with a 2 speed rear end, it is the same pattern you use to shift a super 10, whether it has Top-2 or not.

Take your time with the shifts, since my experience has been that you can't "push" a super 10 as quickly as you can a standard 10 speed. Slow and easy gets the job done with them.

Hello everyone it's been awhile. I got my CDL on wed 2/6/08 and was in the top 95% of my class. At that time I was the only one that had passed just 1 other guy passed for that day of testing.

Does anyone know of a Tanker co. that takes Grads??
I'm from the Dayton,Ohio area and would like to drive a Tanker. It's hard to find a co. that is willing to take on a recent grad any info would be greatly appreciated!!

Possibly. Without knowing what engine it is and how it likes to rev and pull, you are just going to have to play around a bit and see what rpm's the engine is happy with. With a little bit of playing around, you'll find a sweet spot for it. Also, remember that this is a brand new trans, so it is going to shift a bit rougher than one that has some miles and has been broken in.
