Ok I am lost on all this.... I'm going to cdl school next monday so they will teach me this I suppose but I'm curious what these things mean right now. lol

Can someone explain the 34 hour restart? DO you actually have to sit for 34 hours straight after 70 hours of driving time or am I wrong? What exactly do you do during this 34 hours, just hang out at a truck stop?
I was thinking I would be driving 14 hours a day and sleeping 10 for either two or three weeks straight and then come home for a few days off. Is that not the case?

On the 70 hour rule....is that saying you can onl;y drive 70 hours a week?
Can you drive 14 hours a day straight through?

You can only drive 11 hours a day. Not after being on duty for 14 hours. You need 34 hours off to regain your 70 back.

That will explain it in detail

basically once you move your truck you have 14 hours to park it...
in that 14 hours you can drive the max of 11 hours
after that you have to park for 10 hours
after 10 hour break you can repeat that process
You can do that over and over till you hit the max of 70 hours
70 hours would consist of line 3 and 4 on in the log book being added up
line 3 being driving
line 4 would be on duty not working.
on duty not working consist of time used such as pre, trip, fueling, unloading a trl (you unloading the trl) and many other items you will be taught in class..
After you reach 70 you can not move your truck

Now you need to look into the 70 hour rule
70 hours in 8 days
So, if you exceed up to 70 within 8 day you may have to take a 34hr break
then it will reset your clock and you can start from zero again..

Now lets say you ended up with 70 hours on the 8th day you count back 7 days and write down the number of hours you used on line 3 and 4..
then at midnight you would gain those hours back.. So, lets say 7 days ago you had 10 hours on line 3 and 4... So at midnight on the 8th day you would gain 10 hours you could use on the ninth day, but no more then that for the entire 24 hour period...

And yes if you hit your 70 you must park the truck even if your not at home...

MOST OTR drivers if needed take 34 hour breaks out on the road away from the home.. Some drivers get home every weekend and have the option to do it at home...

seems like it would be pretty easy to hit 70 hours in 8 days to me. Are you otr? What do you usually do? I guess it just depends on if things are slow or not huh?

I just really don't like the idea of being off somewhere away from home having to sit for 34 hours. But I also don't want to only drive 8 hours a day to stay under 70.

That's all I have done is drive OTR.. Well it all just depends if you will hit your 70 or not and need to take a 34.. Been with several companies that I would rarely hit it.. Why? well they will run you hard for 3-4 days then all of a sudden you will be sitting more then driving.. So, you would not hit 70 in a 8 day period..

My last company that I miss dearly would run me till i said no more.. I would hit my 70 every week... I loved it this way. Company went out of business arguably cause of the current fuel prices..

Now is it fun sitting out on the road for a 34? Well it all depends where you are at.. Sometimes your out in the middle of nowhere and it totally sucks.......... You can plan a little in order to prevent it but its not always going to end up the way you want it too, its trucking...

Things too do? well I have a PlayStation 3, laptop, extensive movie collection and several other ways I keep myself occupied .. If you don't then you will find yourself spending a lot of money in the truckstop trying to keep yourself occupied.. Always nice to be near a city where you can go around in a little as well.. I guess I have been lucky far as that goes cause I know people just about everywhere I go.. A phone call and I have a ride to go get in some trouble...

Anyways, its basically up to you on how much its going to suck sitting... used to bother to no end when I first started.. I am the type of person that has to be doing something at all times. On top of that I basically have insomnia as well.. So, I used to be pulling my hair out and complaining to my dispatcher too get me moving blah blah blah.. Well over time you will learn that does not help at all to get you rolling so make the best of it..

Anyways good luck, keep your head on strait, keep calm and most important pay attention in class.. Try to get everything you can from it and stay away from the people who are just there to pass and not learn..

what i don't like is what happened to me this.I ran really good for 5 day's then had back to back bad day's.0 hrs on sun.and 3.5 the next day.so of course when those day's rolled around they put a hurt on me had to swap loads and wait but i did'nt get enough waiting time to restart so drove 3-5 one day stopped and then picked up 11 at mid.put's a hurt on your wallet

As much as I love you Notarps! Lets not say you can drive 11 hours a day and leave it that simple. I wish it was that simple, even though the regulations are the easiest to do!

70 hour rule: YOu are only allowed to work 70 hours in 8 days. Therefore if I am starting my day today I shoud total up the hours I worked the LAST 7 days and subtract that from 70 hours. The answer is how many hours I have available for today (because today is my 8th day). There is an example of how to fill out the recap on the log sheet "IF" you have the recap like mine is laid out. Just say the last 7 days (between lines 3 & 4) the total hours I "HAVE" WORKed TOTALS to 60 hours, that means today I only have 10 hour available to work. That means todays lines 3 & 4 should not total more than 10 hours of line 3 or 4 time.

The 11 & 14 hour rule is this: say # 12:15 am you started to work today (being line 4) that started your 14 hour clock so therefore your 14 hour is up # 2:15 pm. Now you drive 11 hours straight before that 14 hour is up.
So you drive until 11:15 am. Now you do a fuel for 15 minutes, that puts you # 11:30 am. So you take your 10 hour break. Which now puts you # 9:30 pm. Now you have reset your 11 & 14 hour rule because you took a consecutive 10 hour break. So now you can drive that very same "24 hour period" 2.5 hours of driving. Now understand your "new" 11 & 14 hour period started # 9:30 pm so therefore your "new 14 hour period will end the "next" day # 11:30 am. Now from 9:30 pm to 11:30 am your driving time (line 3 only) can not total more than 11 hours of driving and you can NOT DRIVE passed that 14 hour rule.

Go to Safety regulations thread and look at the sticky threads and I have several examples "or at least one" that explains in a picture of what I am saying .

Ask questions there and I will probably help out a little more as I don't search this forumn unless I know there is a question about logs and I just so "HAPPENED' TO LOOK TONIGHT
