It seems more often than not that when a company lists its dress code as "Being neat in appearance", what that actually means is, "As long as you shower once every couple of weeks, or three (whether you need it, or not) and some of our customers can accurately guess the original color of your clothing, you are good to go, unless we think, or we think our customers think you need a haircut." Which companies actually mean that "Being neat in appearance" is exactly that and nothing more?

Some people have posted that their employee manuals specify hair length for men. There are certainly plenty of long-haired truck drivers out there. My ex has really long hair and had no problem getting hired.

To me, it's not how much hair you have that matters, rather it's what you do with it...

Depends mostly on the clients the company has. If you are delivering concrete your probably fine. Delivering food, maybe not their best choice.

:biggrin_2554: Where do you come up with this stuff?

MOST OTR truck companies could care less about your hair, peirceings, tattoos, or whatever else you have. As long as you can drive your good to go. (there are a few VERY few that have restictions like Averitt, or tanker companys because you need to be able to seal a face mask on and you cant do that with facial hair)

I feel ya brother, I ended up cutting my hair about 6 months ago to make the job search a little easier. So many places I interviewed with (non-trucking jobs) would tell me how they are equal opportunity and have strict sexual harassment policies, just to follow it up with, "If we hired you, would you be willing to cut your hair?". If I got the vibe that I was not going to get hired anyhow I would say something in return like, "if I was a short haired women, would you tell me I needed to grow my hair out, if I was a Mexican would you tell me I needed to be black, if I was black would you tell me I needed to bleach my skin white?"

It really made me mad, I gave four years of my life to this country, helping to protect our rights and freedom, just to be told I need to cut my hair for some POS job.

But like other people have said, I have seen many truckers with long hair.

I said it was the clients that care, not the employer.

Being a former company president, client perception of employee appearance is very important to me.

Maybe a more professional appearance would help with the public's opinion of truckers. As well as those that make our regulations based on very little knowledge.

Just tell them the hair is a religious thing of your sect. Keep it vague. There are enough branches of every religion that it's possible, and they can't discriminate on religious grounds. Once they get used to your appearance, they won't even notice the long hair anymore, as long as you keep it neat.
