Most companies will not consider your military experience as OTR experience since it's much different type of equipment and work. However, some companies look at the discipline side and want a driver they believe they will not have problems with. You might have some problems finding work since you didn't go to school ( I assume you got your CDL in the military) but the only way you're going to find out is to apply at companies. You can do what I did and create a good resume and attach that to the application. Sometimes they will look at it and sometimes they won't. But if you have a company that might have a slight interest the resume will explain you situation better.
I'm sure you've heard this before and I don't know your situation but if I were you I'd stick it out and get the benefits. I went out with 20 to go and make the "big bucks" and I did that but I wish I would have done 10 more. These driving jobs are not going away and you have plenty of time. Ok enough of that.
If you have the time you should hit the bricks now and try as many companies you can. Even the smaller ones. You never know who will be doing the hiring and it might be someone that knows your position very well.
Just don't go to the big companies. You might get lucky with some company that you never thought would give you a chance. You can use the job fairs that come around or any other avenue you can think of. Try some of the trucking companies that pull for the government. You can check your supply or contract office to find out who they are. Even in the Navy/Army Times there's jobs for driving but then again those are the companies that do not keep drivers because they move on when they get the chance.
Whatever you do it best to go in person and explain your situation instead of calling or mailing your app. Good luck and good hunting and keep us posted.
