Want to get into trucking

Hey everyone, I've decided I want to get into trucking. Now I'm only 20 so I dont have my cdl yet but I was hoping I could get some advice on which companies would be good to start with that offer training to get you your cdl. I dont really have any money saved up so I cant afford school so I really need to find a good company that offers that. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

i just graduated schneider's school yesterday, it was tough but I'd recommend it. I'll be going out with my te (trainer engineer) wednesday for like 3 weeks on the road.

Most companies if not all will require you to be 23

Nobody, at least next to it, is going to hire a 20 year old to drive a truck. Their insurance requirements will generally be 23 to 25 years old.

The best situation would be, IMO, to get hired on with a company that operates trucks such as a Pepsi bottler, or UPS or other such. There are plenty of non-driving jobs such as loading, warehouse work, etc that you can use to build time with the company and move up their ladder. I know locally, after a trial period where they determine if you are a worker or not, the local Pepsi plant will promote you to driving. Initially, it may be a ton truck stocking machines but if you show you are a good worker, they'll eventually want you to drive and they generally pay some or all of your CDL classes.

A Truckers Life

I am not a truck drive but have worked in the industry for many years. If you are single , becoming a driver would be ok..As far as schools, find a school that is longer then 3 wks..I would even try to find a school that lets you do alot of driving..I think the schools should have to take you OUT ON THE REAL HIGHWAYS, TO SOME OF THE REAL LOAD AND UNLOAD PLACES THAT ARE VERY HARD TO GET TO...
Trucking is a hard life, the schools do not tell you everything..
For EXAMPLE: lets day you have your cdl, hire on to a company with a training program..You only do the training for 3 wks..Then you are on your own!! Finding your loading and unloading places with bad directions, then once you get there..you have to wait 6 hrs to get unloaded..you are not sure how to log it, and then you have to figure out how to get the load delivered in the morning..and still log legal...I could go on and on..JUST MAKE SURE YOU FIND ALL ABOUT REAL TRUCK DRIVING
