Is $16.00 hr. a good pay for a local P&D job. Kansas City to Topeka and back 4 to 5 days a week? Home in my own bed every night? Off weekends? I have 4 months experience. My wife just passed away. I decided I will not go OTR again. Because of the things that I have to face now concerning her passing the house, finances and all that. Even if I have to find another job and go back to what I was doing before. Construction and Landscape. I guess I am just wondering if $16.00 for local was a decent wage for me? Hell I'm 48 If anyone can tell me please do so. benefits, 401K, all that. I just had an interview today sounded promissing

Hi J. sorry to hear about your loss. Well to me, it dont sound to bad. I assume you will be doing multiple runs a day/night. Will you have to be doing any unloading or is it all no touch? I'm just not a fan of humping freight. Like what Duker said, with only four months it sounds ok. But for your question, is $16.00 good for you, I dont know, but it might be good for the job it is.

Only you can make the call as to if thats enough money. We don't know your needs or wants for your income.

Well, Mike earns $15.45 an hour when he does P&D but earns more when he's paid by the mile and for trailer switches. I have no idea what the economy is there. Gas is more expensive here so it'll probably do, especially if you can work 50 hours a week or more. So sorry about your wife. Good luck!!

If you compare the hours spent with the truck your pay is far better than OTR. It's sad to say that the guys that have to put up with the worse get paid the least. Sure they make good money bet they have to put in the hours and live in the truck. If that's not a concern to you then your pay is on the low side. But if it is a concern and you like being home every night then the pay is great. The real question here would be can you make any money on overtime? I started around the same pay but had raises until my second year when I topped out. I left at $23.50 an hour but we could pick up 20 hours of overtime every week. It all boils down to what you like. Sorry to hear about your loss.

time and a half after 45 hrs. 50 cent raise after a year. holidays after 30 days. 401K and all that after 90. 1 week vacation after a year. And the interviewer said "we are pretty laid back here" it seemed like it. like a family atmosphere. "if you need a day off, just let us know in advance as you can, cause we all have those times we need a day off for one reason or another" Just talk like that. He seemed very relaxed and an easy going "open Door" kinda person. It's not a huge company and maybe that's good. We'll see I have 3 yrs. military tanker experience. but that was some yrs. ago Used to refuel aircraft witha combo 5k refueler. I just dont care for OTR. I was doing a 7/3 7/4 right after my wife died and found it not working well at all. very unstable as far as spent alot of time sitting when i should have been running. But couldnt go national cause i have things to deal with here. So thats why I sorta hope this works out. It only goes by time behind the wheel.

It sounds like your ticket. Hauling fuel in public is nothing like the military unless you fuel like you did before. But those jobs are at the airport and not on the road. You should set yourself some goals and if you like hauling gasoline then your goal would be to be hired on with the big oil companies. That's where the benefits and money are. But it takes a squeaky clean record and a few years experience. Check it out got talk to a Chevron, BP, or any of the big ones.

Just be sure you're talking to Chevron and not some dedicated company that was hired by them. The way to check is to look on the front door. They must list the company name on the door. Sometimes you'll see a Chevron truck all painted up with the logo's and up on the down you'll see Jacks OIl Company. Now a dedicated carrier sometimes works out very well but there's nothing that will match the big oil companies pay. Something to look into.

yeah I would like to haul fuel have my hazmat tanker endorsement but I know I lack experience. that $16.00 hr called me back, and want to give me a physical and all that. Looks like my job if I want it. I was testing the market. I did some figuring I'm making .30 mile and i figure at 65 that's like $19.50 and hr. this guy wants to pay $16.00 hr for local P&D. I guess i'm basically loosing out on pay. but gaining in being home every night and weekends. a regular routine. Also time and 1/2 after 45 hrs. So, even though I left my other company due to my wifes death. this local wants to pck me up. something is better than nothing and i get experience for that tanker job.

How often are you going to average 65 mph though? Not really sure how you calculated your 19.50hr pay but it dont really matter. And a couple hours overtime at the end of a week would probably make up for any "lost" pay. Anyway good luck.
