tired of the office lifestyle...

I am kinda just wasting away at my desk jockey job for an insurance company. I am 28 years old, and my employer has shown that they like the job that I do for them. I also like my employer, but the job I hold is nowhere near what I dream of doing. I would love a job in transportation. I am a very kinetic person, and I love to be in motion. So, I have researched several areas for job prospects:

1) airline pilot - training is mucho dinero, and no gaurantees. Pay is dirt when you start out, yet training costs run $75-$150 Gs. It would be hard to start out at a regional or Part-135 carrier making peanuts when you have to make a $1100 student/training loan payment. Plus, while love to fly (I have logged 10 hours of time), I prefer to be on road/rail - closer to the earth.

2) locomotive engineer - good job, decent pay, travel, and a real possibility. I have apps into Uncle Pete (UP) and BNSF right now, but you start off as brakeman/switchman before becoming a conductor and then eventually and engineer. Railroads can be hard to work for.

3) OTR Trucker - this is perhaps the prospect that most appeals to me. So, I am trying to do the research, and find a training program that may fit me. I am not sure whether to go with a Community College program here in Kansas City or do a company training deal like Swift or the like.

Does anyone have any advise for an aspiring driver? Are there any particular training programs I should look into? Should I quit my day job for this? Thank you for your time.

One of our forum members, Mr. Dude, just went to work for the railroads. He might be able to answer railroad questions for you.
