One question for gashauler : please define what you meant by find a company that doesn't make their money by the truck( I am paraphrasing )
It has been many many years since I have looked for a job and never at at a Trucking Co.
Any helpful hints would be appreciated
Those are companies that make their money selling their own product and use the truck to take that product to the market. They treat the drivers better and 9 times out of 10 they have much better pay and benefits.

wsyrob,

It's good to see someone else on here that went to Sage in Yadkinville. I start class there on Monday, Dec 8th. What was your experience with the school, good or bad... ?

Thanks,

It was basically good. I passed the CDL Test on my first try. The classroom stuff was pretty much a joke though. They have retired truck drivers with poor teaching skills present the material. Very boring except when they get into tell trucker stories. The same guys are pretty good in the truck.

Just don't think you will learn how to be a trucker from that 6 week course. Once I got on the job with a trainer I realized how much work I had in front of me. I couldn't back the truck well enough to get by at first. I was fortunate enough start with a Tanker company and had about a 3 month training program before being turned loose solo.

I have a thread under Superior Carriers about my first year.
