Question on ABF??

I recently applied to ABF as a driver, but was told that they require 1yr experience. BUT!! I can get a job doing dock work with them part-time, but it wouldn't be more then a few days a month or so. Obviously I couldn't live on that, so I would have to get a regular full-time job.
So any opinions?? Does this sound like a good opportunity to get with a local company plus in the Teamsters??

If you can get a foot in the door. I'd give it a shot. A bud of mine has been on the list for 2 years. But he's being very picky about where he wants to live and work.

I didn't mention in my 1st post that if I work out as a dock worker, they would send me to their school in AR. I just dont know how long that would take.

Many drivers that drive for UPS, ABF, Yellow, and a host of others started on the docks. Worked into a yard dog. Then went to driving.

Nothing wrong with it, if that's your cup of tea. You'll have to work the docks some, as a driver anyway.

Just be aware. No matter what you do, you will still be the low man on the totem pole. And one of the first to be laid of in the event of a slow down.

Nice computer by the way! TWO hard drives? Anyway, I was on ABF's website and read that if you have < 2 years experience you may qualify for their training program? Any thoughts anyone?

Thanks, and yep its 2 hard drives! I talked with the guy at the terminal here in Worcester, MA and he said I could do dock work with them but it would be very limited hours. Maybe 20-30 hr a month. He went on to say if I worked out then he would send me to their training facility in Ark.

Main problem here is obviously you would need a full time job in the meantime. So this is what Im working on. Im thinking since Ive always done dock work that maybe if I work for say ABF, UPS, Yellow or FedX, I would hopefully be able to get in their trucking aspect after a while.

Abf school is 4 weeks at fort smith,Arkansas. They have you work the dock then send you to school(theirs), they have you sign a 2yr contract saying you'll stay with them or they charge you for school.(dont worry the union will fight it and they wont be able to charge you for it) While at Fort Smith you get paid on fridays while there. If you have the time to play the wait game go for it. I have been approved by the Terminal Manager in Seekonk,Ma and I'm waiting for Arkansas to finish there background check. He told me I would work the dock, then goto Fort smith come back work dock until I trigger the contract as a full timer then I'll be able to bid or go on extra board. Best of luck

Thats my biggest problem is playing the waiting game. While I can wait, my bills cannot, unless I just blow them all off which wouldn't be a good thing. The only way I could do it is if I get a local trucking or dock job during the day and then do ABF at night. There would be no way I could do it if Im OTR. Right now though jobs are so limited in Mass that I would be lucky to get a job flippin burgers.

When all else fails look into landscaping. They always need help. Abf will most likely put you on at night so landscape or lawn care during the day. I was up in your neck of the woods today picking up recycled glass, cans & plastic at kirsch liquors.
