Do you love/like

I asked this thread in the experienced page and only had a few responses.

So I thought I would ask here and see the response.

Do you like what you do? Why?

Do you love what you do? Why?

Just a job until? Why?

Just very curious, we talk about particular companies good bad, but we don't express that all in all we still like / love what we do.

I do understand who we work for can affect how we feel about what we do but really looking for the nuts and bolts of what drives us as people to spend our lives on the road for good / bad pay, etc.

NOT BASHING COMPANIES THREAD OR PRAISING.

THANKS FOR YOUR INPUT.............

Seeing how I came up more old school 33 years ago I would have to say I loved driving. No it wasn't the flashy trucks see my pic above ya thats what I drove. We were plainly known as concrete cowboys a selected few that would brave the mile.
I'm glad to have been one of the pioneers who paved the way to the super trucks of today it wasn't and still isn't a job.

IT'S A LIFE STYLE and my hats off to any of you who stuck it out for the past 20 to 30 plus years.

Yes...I can work pretty much unsupervised. I can take off, pretty much when I want or need to.

It became just a job about 5 years ago. When I decided to go to work for a "major" company. Wrongly thinking things would pay more, and be better overall.

The industry itself, is no longer "fun". The camaraderie once shared among drivers. Is pretty much lost forever.

No longer are drivers willing to lend a hand to a fellow driver.

Seldom do drivers "enjoy" a break at the truckstop, with a backrow BarBQ.

No longer can a taxi load of drivers take a break together at the local watering hole, without someone starting a fight, or going to jail.

No longer is there respect for fellow drivers..... young or old

I couldn't agree more with danc694u. I still love the job, the work of it. The lifestyle is fading away however. "Back in the day" seems kind of odd to say, but before cell phones, qualcomm and a zillion driving schools, drivers were different. Help is just a phone call away and a phone is right here in your pocket. What do you need to rely on your fellow driver for? We don't need one another, we don't help one another and we don't know one another like drivers did years ago.

Of course, I could be wrong. I kinda hope so.

I stopped for a driver on Hwy 59 in south Texas. He said he had been broke down on the side of the road for 3 hours. In that time, I was the only person to stop. Other than a Highway Patrol.

He had a cell phone, but no signal. I let him use mine. Then gave him a ride into town, to contact the local shop and get a tow.

Not everyone has QualComm. And not every phone works in all areas.

While I miss the "good ol' days" I don't want to go back, unless I can take my cell phone and other toys

The cell phone has been one of the best ideas of modern tech. Better than the PC IMO.

I took some time off last year to hunt and fish and dabble in the 9 to 5 world. During that year I didn't have a company cell phone and no personal cell phone. Most folks on finding I had no phone did not grasp the notion to stop at my house. Not hard to do as I live in a town of 200 people. Interpersonal relationships are being cast away in the name of convenience. My personal opinion is that cell phones are a pox upon humanity. Call me Luddite if you will, I don't think there is anything good about instant access or instant gratification.

I put this idea forward as a comment on how people interact with one another. The use of cell phones as a business tool is a great thing, but if you would rather call a person than actually sit and talk to them across a table, I think society (large or small) is losing out in the equation.

I have no home phone. And I only give my cell number out to family, and work.

If people wish to speak with me. They will come by my house, write, or relay a message through family. I contact family while on the road. I go see them when I am home, calling of course to make sure it is okay and they are home

Personally, I hate a phone. But the cell phone has brought this industry as whole, to a far better place.

cell phones and drivers

I have a company cell and a personal celll, I have my laptop on the truck. am I connected? Only when I want to be. I discovered they all have off/on swicthws on them. they are only on when I need them to be. Dispatch knows that after I get my ld info, unless there's a problem I will not be in touch. I check in before my drop to make sure everything is good then call in empty and get my next ld. My personal cell is turned on after I shut down and I call my other half and catch up on the day and news. then I turn on this thing and give all you nice folks your daily ration of ^%$*. Drivers broke down on the road will always at least get a yell on the radio from me and if they need more they will get it, even if I have to turn around and come back. I will not leave a driver in distress on the side of the road!!!!! You want to chat at the truck stop? I'm the man!!!! Want to tear up a couple of cold ones after work? I'm there!!! Stay safe
