I was offered a job running team. The O/O is offering .17 for the first month and he will bump it up .01 every month for 4 months. He said we would be running about 20,000 miles as a team a month. I am not sure how to calculate how much I would be making the first month and so on. I know I sound like an idiot, so please forgive me. Do I take .17 x 20,000=3400 a month or do I split the 20,000 miles and it would come out like this instead?? .17 x 10,000=1700. Sorry for the question but I only drove local for 3 years and not over the road.

!st question to ask the employer is are you getting paid .17 for every mile the truck moves, or for only the miles you are driving.
If you are getting paid .17 for every mile the truck moves, you multiply ALL the miles the truck moves by 0.17. If you are getting paid for ONLY the miles YOU drive, you multiply those miles by 0.17.
0.17 for every miles the truck moves works out to about .34 per mile YOU drive if you and your team member drive about the same miles per week. 0.17 per mile for every mile YOU drive only works out to you getting bent over the fuel tank.

Normally teams split the pay right down the middle. In your case it sounds like he is offering .17 cpm times all paid miles which would be 850.00 gross to you.

That is pretty low for team running in my estimation. You would be better off going solo and making around .35 cpm. Of course you will get fewer miles but you will be much better rested. All you need to do is turn 2500 miles at .35 cpm and you would have earned 875.00.

Teaming is better for married couples where all the money goes to 1 family rather than splitting it.

Of course it is up to you. Trying to sleep while a truck is rolling down the highway can be very difficult.

that is right. but i wouldn't run teams for .17 a mile. it's too low. think about it your in a truck that never stops and the day never ends. he is under cutting you and using you to pad his pockets. if you got 3 yrs exp driving, even though it is local, you deserve about .20 to .21 to start witht the same raise deal he said before each month. don't short change yourself finacially.

Hey thanks every one for your quick responses. My problem is all the jobs locally that I could get are jobs that require a lot of physical labor. I have called dozens of company's and was told that I wouldn't be hired because My experience isn't considered "over the road". So even though I have a valid class A with a good driving record I cant get hired on with some of the better co. out there. My options are limited and not sure which direction to go. Thats why I was considering the offer from this O/O. I thought at least I would be getting some experience. But if he only pays on the miles I drive 10,000 a month at .17 then there is no way I would take it. Thanks again for all of your help.

if you run teams you are paid for every mile that truck does each week if your driving or not.
