Inverter Use

Have a small microwave and fan that I'd like to take with me on the road. Obviously, I'd need an inverter that will run 'em, but my question is this? How long can I run the microwave and/or fan off the inverter before I start worrying about draining the batteries on the truck? Obviously, the microwave won't be used on a continuous basis, just long enough to heat up a meal and boil water for my coffee (gotta love those Folger's Coffee Bags!).

I use a 2000 watt inverter, my microwave is about 700 watts. Before I changed jobs, I didn't have an APU, so I would run the engine when I cooked in the microwave. I use a DirecTv system with a 13 inch TV on the inverter. The TV and dish system use little power and I could watch TV for a couple of hours without running the engine.
Wattage / voltage = amperage, so a 700 watt microwave will draw 58 amps at 12 volts, (Engine off) or 50 amps at 14 volts, (Engine running.) I would advise running the engine every time you cook, unless you have an isolated battery. There's nothing like the feeling of turning the key and nothing happens.

Yup had that happen 3 x twice it was the starter though.

I have to say the nothing when key turned feeling is very much trumped by the '######### I just turned the truck off and the starter is broken, I know it is broken, I spent 10 hours getting it started yesterday, and they told me not to turn it off... and I'm 10 miles from the main terminal' feeling >.>

Glad that was my husbands screwup!

I found a guy in the truck stop who lost his keys, he managed to get in the truck and was calling for help on the radio when I heard him. I stopped at the truck stop and picked the iginion switch for him. I told him not to turn it all the way off because it would lock again. Just after I left I heard him on the radio, he stalled the engine at the traffic light getting on the highway, then turned the switch off and it locked. He was sitting in the road with the switch locked, no key, and I was already going up the road. Imagine how he must have felt.
