if you think the army is good the guard is one weekend a month go active duty 88m (truckdriver) and depending on your state they will give you your cdl when you get out (mo you have to take the written tests and have your co sign off and get the form notarized) and they will train you and pay you while training you in any thing you want to do (for the most part)

I too, started my career with Schneider. They have excellent training, and after it's all through, you're actually ready to function out there. I had a few issues with them, but all in all, I'd have to say, based on my experience, they were better than most!

I'm not trying to tell you how to run your life, but I would not go Over The Road with a young family. There are community colleges with trucking programs that will give you grants and loans for schooling and trucking company reps will come to the school to recruit you. I wouldn't go to a private trucking school either. There are many kinds of trucking jobs that allow you to stay near home. Road construction, food delivery, some freight companies have short routes where you're out maybe one night and back home the next. These kinds of jobs are not as stressful because of the repetition and allow you to raise your family the way God intended. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I live in Southern California with wall to wall traffic. So even 4 loads to the same place can take 12 hours or more.

I've done the "local" gig.
Didn't like it at ALL.
And I don't want to be home every night.

I understand what you mean. I'm in the midwest. You just get in and go. The biggest problem with delivery and truck&pup type jobs here is boredom. That's why you need to go home to your honey...for the excitement. It sounds like killer11 may have been overdoing the excitement lately?

HeY Ken,
Is that Texaco truck stop still there in Lincoln? Shoemakers, I think it was/is.

I used to pull a lot of loads out of Lincoln from the Cushman Company --- to all parts of the country, and spent MANY nights at the Texaco truck stop.

Yes it is. That's where I park the rig when I'm home for a weekend. One of the few indies that's still doing well. And they still feed you like a king. And free wifi. And pretty girls. And guys(depends on what you like??) I think I'll quit there.

Cushman's got bought by a foreign company, then shut the doors and moved to Mexico or somewhere. We could use some of those scooters right now.
