4-wheeler insurance rates for truckers?

I've searched the forum and can't find an answer to a question I have. What, if anything, normally happens to your automobile insurance rates once you obtain a CDL?

Common sense dictates that as long as you keep your MVR clean and aren't an owner/operator (you're a company driver driving on THEIR insurance), nothing should change. BUT, insurance rates were never based on common sense.

Your auto policy probably has fine print: does not apply when driving a commercial vehicle. However, if you get points with your CDL, you auto premiums may increase.

You may want to add catastrophic claims protection to an auto or property insurance policy to get general protection in case of a truck accident. Usually, your employer's insurance will cover, but you never know.

Different policies and different rates.

You'll find after driving a while, at least in my experience, that based on your good driving record, your premiums will go down some...on both.

If I understand what I was told correctly..............

If you get a ticket (at least in California) and you have a CDL (Class A) you cannot go to traffic school to remove the points off your record.

Your points are also calculated at 1.5 times the normal points.

If this is true then your premiums would go up if you got a ticket.

I called Geico last week when I got my license and they said there was no change but that I was not covered by them in a commerical vehicle.

That is true and do not run a red light in CA, you'll get a suspension on your license too

Anything you get in your truck will effect you in your car, and anything you get in you car will effect you in your truck...
Only difference is in your truck you may have to pay higher fines, may get more points, lose certain privileges such as taking a DMV coarse to have points removed ext..

I got a warning ticket for insufficient tread depth on a trailer tire, in Indiana. I have a Michigan CDL. My car insurance premium increased. I explained to the insurance company that the tire was owned by my employer, and had nothing to do with my car. They lowered the premium. Our car is insured by AIG.
