Sleeping Bag Temp

I will be driving starting this fall and what is a good all-around sleeping bag to have for using it in the 11 western states in the fall and winter months. I have seen 0 degree, +10,+20,and +30 bags.

Most of us use sheets, blanket, and comforter on our beds. I don't think you'll need anything below zero.

Such would be my estimation, too. Especially if the truck has a respectable heater in it.

If you feel the need, though, I'd go for the coldest possible bag. It's a lot easier to unzip and cool off than it is to stay warm in temps too low for the bag. Put the bag in the closet or away until such time as you need it, though. No point in using it every day when a sheet/blanket will do just fine.

I always carried a sub zero for emergencies purpose but never used... I do have a zero that I used alot, in the 30"s- upper 20"s it would be to hot unless you unzipped it and used it like a blanket.. Get down in the lower 20"s and it worked great.. Start getting down in the singles and your feet would start getting could in a zero but still usable... (recommended you idle your truck once you enter the singles anyways to keep it from freezing up.. Schneider used to train thier students that 18 degrees was the magic number before you would not be charged for idle time...

Charge as in adding up idle time... if you kept your idle low and other things as well you would get a bonus.. I only missed my bonus once with them, $800-1200 i could sleep in a sleeping bag, been threw a lot worse in the Army..... (So, anything below 18 degrees would not count against you getting your bonus) that was 5 years ago who knows what it is like now...
I asked about everything, that's just how I am... They said they researched it and came up with a truck should be fine down to 18 degrees and not have trouble starting.... Lived by that rule and I have not had an issue with my trucks starting, although i make sure that my air lines were clean by draining my tanks often, made sure my water separator was drained daily (the trucks that had them) ext..

Yeah. May has a scale.. you can idle X% in this month, Y% in that month. If you idle less, they pay you the difference in fuel costs. If you idle more, they charge you for the fuel.

Additionally, you can request an exemption - we did in Georgia, twice. 90+ degrees F at midnight.. idling for exempted times does not count against your total.

Back orginal question...

Aside from the normal sheet and comforter.

You can play this several ways. You can go with a sub zero sleeping bag, or one that is good down to 25 degrees. The sub zero will set you back a bit.

I prefer the 25 degree bag for various reasons. Namely, it is good enough to go below freezing. Without being too good/hot when temps hover around 40 degrees.

I also carry a set of double lined insulated underwear on my truck. If temps really take a hard dive, or I get stuck in much colder weather. I simply slip them on for added comfort. This adds an additional degree of protection well below zero with a 25 degree sleeping bag. Throw a sheet and your comforter in the mix...you're safe for extended periods well below zero if you break down with no heat.

Both of these items stay on my truck, stored away, year round.

I received a gift of "socks" this past Christmas from my sister. One of the best gifts I've ever gotten. She made me a customer for life. I'll be using these again this winter. Silk liner, with a heavy wool outer

Additionally, I carry a couple of cans of Sterno for emergencies. It won't provide a lot of heat. But it will raise the temp by a few degrees inside the cab, and heat a food source. The fumes are safe, so no worries about that.

Plan for the worse, hope for the best. The only item I haven't had to use...the Sterno. Thankfully.

good reasoning. I'm blinded by my own bag, I guess. Had it for years... getting so it even looks like me (smelled like me for almost as long as I've owned it, of course)

I've never slept "in" mine. I've always used it like a comforter, even in below zero weather. The foam in the mattress is a good insulator. If it got so cold I needed to. I guess I could. But I've woke up to -13 on my thermometer. So it's gonna have to get mighty cold before I crawl in it.

I think the comment made earlier about the feet getting cold, is an issue either way. That's how I got sold on those socks
