Hazmat routing?

I'm a new tanker driver and have am having issues navigating when I have a placarded tanker. Copilot becomes unreliable when I route hazmat. Any recommendations of a program or map that helps drivers pick safe hazmat routes?

Much appreciated in advance,

Jason

Doesn't that CoPilot program have an add-on specifically for tanker routes? If they aren't reliable I'd call them and ask whats going on. Beyond the GPS the only other way I could think of is the gool 'ol fashioned map books and trip planning.

I usually ask my company for a route whenever I haul Hazmat. I always use their directions from interstates to the consignee.

That's the way it should be done. The company is required by DOT to train it's employees that haul Hazmat on correct routing. I've never had this problem because all my trips were laid out by the company but this link may help,

Excellent link. I used it tonight with a load of Acetic Anhydride.

Thanks, I'm retired now so I have the time to find things. Unless I'm either fishing, golfing, or traveling.

I've never trusted company routings. Better to be in the dark, than assume your company is right. I've been routed through tunnels and residential areas. Then get the proverbial phone call, asking why the hell I was so far out of route. DUH!

HazMat hauling is a real no brainer actually. Not that difficult to plan/route. Although it can be a pain in the paycheck if your company uses the HHMG to pay you by.

I look forward to 2010 when the majority will not have/renew theirs. And mine becomes solid gold, for wage demands.

There are typically signs posted for hazmat carriers when routing could become an issue. Most jurisdictions ban the use of tunnels by all hazmat traffic. The PA turnpike commission, however, only prohibits bulk shipments and table 1 classes from their tunnels.
