| I am from Virginia. I want to study to be a tractor trailor driver. I have a 3 year old non-violent felony conviction. I've visited a few websites and found that truck driving companies will not hire you if you have a felony conviction. I have a friend that told me there are some companies that will hire persons with felony conviction depending on what the conviction was for and how old it was. I don't know if this is true or not so that is why I came to this forum. I want to know is it worth me putting forth the effort to try and find a school to train me or should I just think about a new career. I'm thinking that there probably are schools out there that will train me because they want my money but once I get my cdl I won't be able to get a job because of my past. Is this true or does anybody have any advice....Thanks |

| There are many companies that will hire you. A lot will depend on the charge, but most of it will depend on your degree of honesty. If it's a drug related charge... it's gonna be tough with any company. Southern Refridgerated hires people with felony convictions, as do others.

You may not be able to get a hazmat endorsement with your conviction. I'm not sure how they are doing this now, but if you can't get that, many common carriers will not be interested in you. OTOH, some companies that run their own trucks and don't do any hazmat might be able to put you on. You just need to contact a whole bunch of companies and see what they say.

| You won't be allowed to go to Canada, but who cares? Canada will allow you to apply for a perminant visa, $1000 and a year, you have to apply and send them copies of the court records, the $1000 is non-refundable, they can deny the application and keep your money. Some states will allow you to have the conviction expunged after ten years. There are alot or companies that will hire you, and you can even get the Hazmat endorcement. Don't let the conviction stop you from getting your CDL. |

Unfortunately the offense was a drug related (3 years ago). But after getting advice from this forum I'm gonna take a chance, save some money and study to get my CDL-A. When I do I'll look into that Company. Thanks for the advice. |

| I am going to be honest with you but all the big companies will not hire a convicted felon within the 5-7 year timeframe. 80% of the companies will not hire recent felons. I have a non-conviction felony on my record and Schneider, JB hunt, Knight, CR England, Heartland, Swift, Yellow, Southeastern, DOT, Palmer, US Express, Werner, Stevens, shall I go on? None would give me a chance and its the only thing on my record. non-violent 1 year old. |
