| everyone has their own way of connecting the trailer once you are through with the school and finally are on the road... it is best to get into a routine that you follow each and every time... I drive a long nose pete and the fifth wheel sits higher than the freightshakers in our company... so i back under the trailer watching to see if the trailer starts to raise... if not then i set the brakes.. get out and raise the landing gear about an inch off the ground.. then proceed to back into the trailer... watch out.. if the trailer tires are all the way back and the trailer is heavy you will have some troubles backing under the trailer.... drop the bags .. back under about half way up the fifth wheel and then raise the bags again... back into the trailer till you hear the jaws shut... do your pull test... pop the brakes and then hook up air lines and pwr cord... raise landing gear and shine a light on the jaws... making sure they are shut and the kingpin flange is below the jaws... do your pretrip on the trailer and set your trailer tires to the correct hole for the weigh you are carrying.. if you get into a routine that you do each and everytime you will not forget the simple things like forgetting to raise your landing gear... seen a few do that after they find out they jammed the trailer on a bump in the road... |

| I don't often drop my trailer, but when I do I drop the air bags for both coupling and uncoupling....helps keep the grease on the 5th wheel instead of scraping it off. No, not all the way, when there are still about 10 inches of the 5th wheel NOT under the trailer then I raise the bags and continue with the coupling process. |

| Ceerist! We almost finished our school before we went to pretrip. The initials are W/S! Passed, ok? Please don't get under a trailer without a tug test. I did that ONCE and almost lost it (reciever brought out the towmoter and held it up while I got underneath the trailer again. Winter alert!!!! The weather can cause a buildup of 5th wheel grease around the locking latch. You can LOOK and think that it's latched. Good luck when you go around the first corner. TUG!!!!!!! And another thing, when you drop a trailer, don't lower the landing gear so much that the suspention looses air.. A truck should drop bags to get under a trailer and then when they inflate the trailer should lift off the gear. Otherwise there is a shotgun sound when the gear snap off of the pavement because they are bound up. It sucks to crank bound up gear. My company local drivers can't grasp this concept. Can you? Question? |

I am not trying to boss you. I researched the rules and reg's that the schools and testers have to /suppose to follow. I got it off of a dot website. How do you know what experince I have in trucking I may have not updated the info or just do not wish anyone to know how long I have been in trucking. I will tell you that I have been arround trucking most of my life. I have seen the rules and regs change more than will ever know. I have talked to some old timers and they started talking about how the rules and regs use to be and they were supprised when I said I rember that one. |
