Stop looking for a quick fix

Sweetie I know it's tough and very stressful when the wolf is knocking at the door. But the reality is you are looking for a quick fix where money is concerned and I am here to tell you from experience that it doesn't work that way in this business.

Orientation pay is low. Time waiting on the trainer pays nothing. Training pay is low. Waiting to get upgraded pays little to nothing. There is money to be made once he is through the orientation, completed the training, upgraded to first seat and finally getting good runs on his own. But all of that takes time.....as much as eight weeks or more depending on all the circumstances and the company.

He needs to stop starting over and figure out whatever he needs to do to get done and stay put. Otherwise now everybody new he goes to can see he has already been three other places and didn't stay. That makes him a risk to hire.

I don't know your personal situation and wouldn't pretend to. But maybe you can try to come up with some other income to help out in the meantime until he can get out there to make the money. Good Luck.

Right now the companies have the option to pick the cream of the crop per say.. The industry is just not needing that many new drivers as of right now, as you know the economy is not doing that well and the economy directly effects the amount of trucks needed..

Your hubby only scoring a 70% on a test sounds to me perhaps he is not taking things serious while attending class.. Need to study and seek out others who want to study and have study groups AFTER class as well..

What are our options now? We can't have these foolish games these companies are playing with us. We have bills to pay

I wonder if the problem lies, with who actually wants to be a truck driver. Sounds like she is more interested in the career field then he is.

Arpokor, I've had this thread on my mind all day. Maybe because your age is close to my own daughter's or maybe because of a young girl your age who works for me. But regardless of the reason I felt compelled to come back and post again. I saw that you were on this thread earlier today so I know you are reading the comments here.

I went back and read through most all of your previous post and I found two common themes among them....

1. You want your husband making really good money as soon as possible (very understandable)
2. You want your husband at home with you as much as possible (also very understandable)

But the problem I see here is that perhaps being a professional truck driver is the wrong choice for the two of you because there is really no way you are going to have both of those things starting out in this industry unless he just happens to stumble upon a local job that will hire him with no experience.

I saw in one of your post where you say you are only 22 years old but have been married five years. Obviously that means the two of you were just kids when you married. So I am sure that separation anxiety of him now leaving you at home alone is difficult to deal with. You've raised each other. But kiddo you have to wake up and smell the real world coffee. You've got bills to pay.

You said you have dreams of him making better money so you can move into a better place. But in the same breath you don't want him taking a job where he is gone more than two weeks. You say companies are now sending him home from orientation. But in previous post you say he was headed for training with Schieder then also with Werner. That tells me they hired him because you don't get a trainer without being hired. But something went wrong so he moved on to Swift. By now his DAC report is screaming "DO NOT HIRE ME" cuz I'm not staying.

Maybe the two of you need to sit down together and figure out what is really right for both of you. You need to decide what your priorities really are. Can he take a job of some other kind at home that doesn't require him being gone? Sure it might be a lot less money but that's the trade off. In other words, is the better place to live worth him being gone for weeks at a time? If your answer is no...then learn to live within your means and have a happy life. If your answer is yes...then suck it up, grow up and support his career choice so he can make that money you desire.

So many young people today WANT IT ALL and they WANT IT NOW. But sweetie life doesn't work that way. Trust me, at 22 there are many disappointments, heartaches and heartbreaks yet to come. There are also many celebrations, miracles and moments of pure joy yet to come. And you have no control over which ones come at you next.

Nobody can tell you what is right for the two of you. But don't try to steer your husband toward this career then sabotage it the moment he takes a step forward. Whatever has caused him to keep leaving these companies needs to be fixed and then he needs to be upfront with the next company willing to give him a shot. And you need to do whatever you have to do to support him if that is what the two of you decide. Get a job if you are able to work. Or find a hobby. Do some volunteer work. Anything to help you with the lonely hours.

I believe there is a lesson in your story for every new student and wannabee truck driver out there with a wife at home. You must be in this together or you are doomed from the start.

I truly wish you the best of luck!

Hometime, Thank you for such a great post! I am a new truckers wife - who just sent her 2 sons off to college and now her husband out on the road. I've struggled with the "being alone" issue - but reading through your post made me stop and think about what was most important in all of our lives! Weighing the "away" to the benefits was an important process and made me realize he needs to go on the road to help put the kids thru school AND most important it's something he's wanted to do for the past 20 years! Now we need to get him hired on. We found out that there is a time limit (?) from when he graduated from his school and getting hired??? He has been out of school for 2 months (licensed for 1 month due to DMV scheduling constraints)- went with Roehl but they released him after Evo I due to needing add'l training in downshifting - now noone will accept him without a refresher course??? Does any of this make sense?

You can try May trucking they have a terminal in Flordia they will train him he needs to be up front with them about not being able to downshift very good.
He needs to step on it they kind of frown upon beeing out of school for more than 60 days.
You may want to tell them that it took one month just for him to get his license because they had a back log of people to be tested at the dmv it may help you out a little.

The most important thing is be honest..

Hometime, thanks a lot for the comment that was very nice of you. Well when I said training with shneider, that was the first company he went with, we wasn't with a trainer, he was still in orientation and got sent home for getting a 70% on a test.

He has nothing on his record at all. The people at swift we're older, and my husband and another 22 year old that we're there, they treated like crap. It seems to me, if you not on the older side, the hardly consider you..at least the people that make the decisions. The told everyone to bring their luggage on the last day because they we're sending people home, and thats what they did.

Why would I lie? He has nothing on his record and only 1 speeding ticket from a few years ago. Everyone can say what they want, but he's being discriminated against for being young.
